Senior/Principal Mechanical Design Engineer - RAS

Our marine business is offering an excellent opportunity for a Senior or Principal Mechanical Design Engineer (depending on experience) to join the RAS/FAS Value Stream team at our offices in Gateshead, UK.
As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will become part of the Marine industry's leading edge. You'll have the opportunity to use your skills and experience in an environment where excellence is always paramount.
This role will work as part of a multidisciplinary team producing designs for equipment associated with specialist Naval deck machinery, including Replenishment At Sea (RAS) equipment, winches, reelers, and cranes. The position entails whole-life technical involvement, from interpreting customer requirements during tendering, through concept development, detailed design, manufacturing support, testing, and installation onboard naval vessels. You will also be responsible for identifying and undertaking R&D and improvement activities to keep our product at the cutting edge of Naval technology.
Key responsibilities and tasks include:
- Leading the technical delivery of projects overseeing a multidisciplinary team.
- Developing Mechanical Engineering solutions that fulfill client requirements, progressing from requirements capture through concept design to product development, commissioning, and in-service support.
- Identifying and developing R&D and Continuous Improvement opportunities.
- Investigating safety and technical problems using structured problem-solving techniques.
- Working effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Providing technical reference/guidance to equipment suppliers, internal departments, and customers. Approving/witnessing factory tests and inspections at suppliers' works.
- Managing supplier interfaces and providing technical assistance/approval to suppliers.
- Checking the technical work of others and providing guidance to colleagues, suppliers, and customers.
- Creating technical design appraisal documents for submission to marine classification societies.
- Managing requirements, risks, assumptions, interfaces, and issues during all design phases.
Qualifications and experience required:
- BEng in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent technical capability based on practical knowledge and experience.
- Chartered Engineer or working towards Chartership with IMECHE or other relevant institute.
- Relevant engineering experience.
- Experience working in a highly regulated industry.
- Preferred experience in marine or offshore oil and gas industries.
- Proven track record in leading technical project delivery to quality, cost, and schedule.
- Experience spanning concept, product development, and in-service support.
- Experience creating equipment assembly arrangements and Bills of Materials using ERP/MRP systems.
- Assessment of designs for code compliance, using hand calculations and FEA.
- Producing technical specifications, test procedures, and manuals for marine mechanical systems.
- Proficiency with 2D and 3D CAD systems like AutoCAD and Creo.
- Competent in MS Office applications.
- Familiar with BS EN 8888 and BS EN 22553 standards.
- Ability to work in a controlled documentation environment, be self-motivated, and contribute positively to a team.
- Strong communication skills to interface with external approval bodies such as marine classification societies and MOD departments.
Note: Some projects involve UK Ministry of Defence contracts; the successful candidate must attain UK BPSS or SC clearance without caveats.
