Job Description
Senior Technical Engineer BMS Specialist (XN06) Weare recruiting for a new member of staff to maintain and develop the TrustsBuilding Management System (BMS) which is based on Honeywell TRENDarchitecture. An understanding of BMS control logic and systems architectureis essential. The key responsibility of the post will be helping to ensuresafe, effective and efficient healthcare is delivered across two major acutehospitals in Leeds and several other sites.

Therewill be a requirement to manage external contractors working for the Trust ona day to day and individual project level.Estates staff who work with mechanical and electrical systems willalso be under your direction and there will be opportunities for developmentwithin project management as well as within risk & compliance management,energy management and intelligent systems.

TheSenior Technical Engineer will report to the Environmental Manager (Energy),who will be responsible for developing their skills, but they will also workflexibly and provide ongoing support to senior Estates colleagues. We arelooking for an enthusiastic, team player, who is proactive, resilient anddriven to succeed, with a real commitment to work in the NHS. This is a trustwide position, predominately based at St James University Hospital in Leeds,but with flexible working encouraged.

Main duties of the job Thisrole provides the following services to the Trust:

TheBMS Specialist will develop proficiency in the use of the Trend Engineeringtool (SET) with a full understanding of IQ Vision and Trend Tonn devices onthe Niagara 4 platform.

Usingthese tools, the BMS Specialist will create and update graphics using theinbuilt design templates in IQ Vision in conjunction with SET. They will alsocreate new strategies to enhance control/energy saving.

Theywill help Estates by identifying issues with plant, directing them to rectifyfaults. They will also check alarm systems are functioning correctly,resolving any issues as they arise, monitoring the BMS system and attacheddevices. The next stage will be reporting issues to Estates colleagues andshift engineers if urgent. Good written communication skills are required toproduce detailed reports on plant and actions required to engineers and othercolleagues.

Abig part of the role is developing BMS projects and project management,including ordering small scale BMS works. This involves working closely as ateam with colleagues and developing good relationships with System Houseengineers.

This post will require high degrees of both knowledge and experience within BMS environments and require the post holder to work independently from the outset.

Job responsibilities Thisrole provides specialist technical advice and engineering support across awide range of business functions including supporting, updating, replacingand implementing new or enhanced building energy management systems andapplications.

TheSenior BMS Engineers provides technical solutions and support for Estates& Facilities specific, specialised embedded systems including but not belimited to access control, building energy management and large-scaleactivity systems through mobile devices.

Itis a hands on role that requires the qualifications and experience to workwithin BMS panels that are supplied at mains voltage, candidates without thenecessary experience will not be considered.

Thetwo BMS Engineers work closely with the Trust's Energy Manger in developingand maintaining the Trust's BMS capabilities. Key areas of responsibilityinclude:

Liaising with operational managersto convert their high level non-technical requirements into detailedtechnical specifications for the delivery of systems to their requirementseither by adapting configurations locally, or by instructing change to softwaredesign from the supplier.

Taking operational managersstatements of requirements for data analysis and reporting, and craftingreports from available system data that can be automated to support managersin their operational decision making.

Maintaining both a high-levelunderstanding of the business requirements that a system fulfils as well as theunderpinning technical architecture required to deliver those businessrequirements, and being able to identify the changes required better meet therequirements.

Analysing system data to identifyareas of problem or potential improvement for discussion with operationalmanagers, being sure to communicate highly technical aspects in anon-technical manner that the operational managers can understand.

Interpreting complex developingtechnical issues into a form that can be understood by operational managers,to avoid these developing into system, data or operational problems.

Managing and maintaining useraccounts and system rights by setting up users, altering user profiles,regularly reviewing and housekeeping accounts and profiles to ensure onlyappropriate access is provided

Maintaining control devices,re-imaging, repairing and trouble-shooting issues to ensure plant is keptoperational as fully as possible

Recommending changes to controldevice configurations, both from the point of view of delivering a highlysecure service as well as ensuring best usage of the investment made

Thepost holder is required to communicate complicated and very detailedinformation to the following staff or groups of staff who are likely to havea limited understanding of the systems:

End users at all levels.

IT staff in other sections ordepartments across the Trust.

Business and operational managers.

External accountmanagers/suppliers.

External software/hardwareengineers.

Thepost involves prolonged work in the PC environment including VDUs, keyboardsand mice as part of the daily routine.

Advancedkeyboard skills for data input, database manipulation, production of reports,system upgrades and implementations will be required.

Therewill be a regular requirement for prolonged concentration on complexactivities (e.g. problem identification and resolution, systemconfiguration), and advanced physical skills in terms of accuracy Frequentrequirement to concentrate for long periods when analysing data, systemconfigurations, developing new control strategies, fault findings bugs incomputer systems and for diagnosing complex problems with regularinterruptions to deal with end user issuers.

Workis frequently required in dusty, dirty environments when installing ormaintaining embedded hardware.

Whilstthe post is nominally based at Saint James's University Hospital, the postholder will be expected to travel to, and undertake work at any unit withinthe Trust. Work may also be required outside normal office hours includingevenings and weekends (normally by prior arrangement).

Person Specification Other Criteria
  • Ability to appreciate and understand the need for confidentiality and discretion in dealing with sensitive data.
  • Able to fulfil Occupational Health requirements for the post.
  • High standard of personal presentation.
Qualifications
  • Degree level or significant relevant experience in a relevant technical environment.
  • Equivalent of Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installations
  • Specialist training in embedded control systems.
  • Trend BMS Systems User and Installer Expert.
Experience
  • Embedded systems used to run buildings estates and facilities services.
  • Communicating complex technical issues where there are barriers to understanding.
  • Control system configuration/strategy design, fault diagnosis/fixing.
  • Experience or working on Estates & Facilities related technical systems.
  • Up to date knowledge of current practice, tools and processes used in configuring, supporting or expanding building/logistics/activity related systems.
  • Experience and developed skills for accurately analysing or manipulating data, modifying system and hardware configurations to meet agree policy and business processes.
  • Significant experience within an IM&T project/development environment or equivalent experience.
  • Experience of tools and processes used in configuring supporting and expanding building/logistics/activity related systems.
  • Use of 3rd party reporting tools for production of management information.
  • Control systems configuration, operation and support.
