Job Description

Senior Service Designer

Location: London preferred, Manchester considered
Working pattern: 1 day per week at base location + 1-2 London team days per month (flexibility required as project scales up)
Duration: 4 months
Rate: (Inside IR35)
Experience level: 4+ years in senior design roles
Environment: Highly technical, working alongside data engineers and analysts

Essential Skills

Service Design Expertise

  • Proven experience designing and delivering complex, large-scale services within central government or similar regulated environments

  • Strong ability to balance user needs with organisational goals

  • Skilled in service mapping, blueprinting, and storyboarding to communicate design intent

  • Confident in service prototyping and transforming concepts into tangible solutions


Communication & Facilitation

  • Excellent storytelling and communication skills for diverse audiences

  • Experienced in workshop design and facilitation, driving collaboration and consensus

  • Strong capability in engaging with and understanding the needs of senior stakeholders

  • Hands-on approach, working closely with interaction designers and delivery teams to realise service designs


Technical Environment

  • Strong technical literacy, comfortable working with engineers, analysts, and data professionals

  • Background in or exposure to data-driven projects (highly desirable)

  • Confidence working with numerical and spreadsheet-based information

  • Experienced in agile, multi-disciplinary delivery environments


What You'll Be Doing

  • Designing and shaping large-scale internal services for senior government users

  • Facilitating stakeholder workshops and discovery sessions with leadership teams

  • Producing service maps, blueprints, and storyboards that communicate clear design direction

  • Collaborating closely with interaction designers, data engineers, and analysts in a technical delivery setting

  • Acting as a bridge between business and technical teams, translating needs into actionable design outcomes

  • Prototyping and iterating service concepts to validate and refine user experiences
