The Opportunity

We are supporting a defence organisation at the forefront of cyber security research and innovation, seeking a Senior Scientist with strong expertise in Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning applied to cyber security.

This is a research-led role, focused on the security of AI/ML systems, exploring emerging threats, developing novel approaches, and shaping future cyber capability. You will work in an environment where problems are genuinely complex and often have no off-the-shelf solutions.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Conducting hands-on AI/ML research in cyber security, with particular focus on the security of AI/ML systems

  • Designing and prototyping innovative solutions to emerging cyber threats

  • Translating research into practical outputs, including prototypes, reports, white papers and technical documentation

  • Collaborating with internal cyber teams, industry partners and academic institutions

  • Contributing to horizon scanning, innovation roadmaps and future capability development

  • Supporting knowledge transfer and mentoring activities within the wider team

What We're Looking For

Essential:

  • A Master's or PhD in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning or Cyber Security

  • Strong research background (academic, applied or industrial)

  • Deep understanding of AI/ML algorithms and techniques

  • Strong Python skills for research and prototyping

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts clearly

Desirable:

  • Experience applying AI/ML in cyber security contexts

  • Research into adversarial machine learning, model robustness or AI system security

  • Publications, patents or other research outputs

  • Cyber security certifications or relevant research experience

Why Apply?
  • Work on nationally significant cyber challenges

  • Engage in genuine research and innovation, not operational delivery

  • Collaborate with leading experts across government, industry and academia

  • Be part of a long-term programme with strong continuity and impact

Eligibility

Due to the nature of the work, applicants must be UK-based and eligible for BPSS clearance.
