Main duties of the job

The post holder is a senior member of the multidisciplinary Nuclear Medicine team with responsibilities spanning leadership, clinical service delivery, training, and operational management.

• Clinical Leadership - Performs and oversees imaging using SPECT, SPECT-CT, PET-CT, DXA, and associated laboratory techniques. Ensures compliance with SOPs and legislation (e.g. IR(ME)R, IRR17), adapts protocols as needed, and maintains high image quality for accurate diagnosis.
• Radiopharmaceuticals & Laboratory - Prepares, dispenses, and administers radiopharmaceuticals aseptically. Receives, assays, and documents deliveries. Conducts quality control on equipment and laboratory tests per best practice.
• Patient Care - Leads on patient preparation, consent, and communication. Adapts procedures to individual needs while maintaining safety, dignity, and confidentiality.
• Operations & Administration - Manages workflow, scheduling, and team allocation. Supports resource optimisation, radiation safety, incident reporting, and fault resolution.
• Leadership & Training - Deputises for the Operational Superintendent. Mentors junior staff and students, contributes to audits and research, and actively engages in CPD and service improvement.

Key responsibilities

• Leadership and Operational Support - Act as Deputy to the Operational Superintendent when required; lead and manage daily clinical workload; coordinate with administration for appointment bookings; liaise with Clinical Scientists to ensure timely processing and review of imaging data.
• Clinical Expertise and Imaging Procedures - Perform all clinical Nuclear Medicine procedures, including PET-CT, SPECT, SPECT-CT, DXA, and ECG monitoring. Operate imaging equipment and IT systems (RIS, PACS). Ensure safety and quality in diagnostic scans. Acquire, analyse, and process diagnostic and non-imaging investigations for accurate clinical diagnosis. Assess image quality and biodistribution; identify need for further intervention. Gain IV access and perform cannulation for radiopharmaceutical administration and blood sampling.
• Radiopharmacy and Laboratory Duties - Receive, unpack, assay, and document radiopharmaceuticals; prepare, dispense, and administer diagnostic radiopharmaceuticals aseptically. Perform in vitro procedures and prepare laboratory results for clinical reporting. Carry out daily radiopharmacy QC checks on dose calibrators.
• Patient Care and Management - Prepare and explain procedures to patients; obtain informed consent. Adapt procedures with clinicians to meet patient needs. Deliver compassionate care in line with policies.
• Training, Supervision, and Development - Lead training for students, trainees, and new staff. Participate in audits, protocol development, and research; engage in CPD and postgraduate training to maintain competency.
• Health, Safety, and Radiation Protection - Apply universal precautions; respond to spills or incidents; perform daily radiation monitoring and maintain records. Ensure compliance with radiation safety legislation and guidelines. Use patient handling equipment safely and assist with transfers to imaging equipment.
• Quality Assurance and Equipment Maintenance - Conduct routine QA tests on imaging and radiopharmacy equipment. Report and troubleshoot issues with supervision and relevant teams.
• Administrative and Clerical Support - Assist with scheduling, bookings, and patient enquiries. Produce accurate clinical and technical documentation. Organise worklists and support operations in the absence of senior staff. Use systems (e.g., CRIS) to document and monitor workflow.
• Governance and Compliance - Ensure full compliance with SOPs, protocols, legislation, and governance. Investigate and report incidents, contributing to safety and improvement. Recommend service enhancements and workflow changes.

Person Specification Education and Qualifications

• BSc in Radiography/ Nuclear Medicine or equivalent
• Evidence of continuing professional development (CPD)
• Experience as a moderator or assessor for the IPEM technologist training scheme or mentoring junior staff

Knowledge and experience

• Excellent knowledge of nuclear medicine procedures; competent with complex scanning equipment and related IT
• Competent in data acquisition and analysis for General Nuclear Medicine and PET/CT
• Expertise in all Nuclear Medicine procedures including data analyses
