The Role

Working in a dedicated team of industry professionals you will provide a creative and problem-solving solution to a range of groundbreaking projects. Primarily you will develop specialist bespoke equipment for the medical devices and wider life science industry sectors. Customer focus is key, and you will be liaising daily with a multinational blue chip client base. This position reports to the Mechanical Design Manager.

Key Responsibilities
  • Be responsible for the creation and development of design solutions for special purpose high -speed automated life science assembly and packaging machinery projects
  • Produce technical documentation for life science projects-GAMP 5 design and validation documents
  • Provide the Application Engineering team with quotation support through drawings, concepts and budgets
  • Communicate effectively with customers, suppliers and team members
  • Work closely with other engineering disciplines to ensure that product performance, reliability and cost expectations are met
  • Perform engineering calculations to validate functionality, component sizing, speeds / rates, failure modes, etc. to ensure the designed solution will be feasible, robust, and reliable.
  • Collaborate on design solutions with cross-functional teams (Electrical Design, Controls, Assembly).
  • Develop concepts and 3D designs utilizing what was proposed by the Applications group to align the design direction with the contractual scope and functional requirements.
  • Ensure solutions align to required compliance standards including safety, ergonomics, and more.
  • Lead interactive design reviews, both internal and customer facing, to communicate design direction with confidence and clarity, while receiving and evaluating cross-functional input.
  • Collaborate with the Supply Chain group to source and select major 3rd party technical vendors.
  • Produce 2D assembly and manufacturing drawings, pneumatic schematics, Bills of Materials, Spare Parts lists, and assist with required deliverable documentation.
  • Review other designer's concepts, designs, and drawings to verify feasibility, accuracy, thoroughness, and alignment to Convergix standards and best practices.
  • Assist with the development of other Mechanical Designers through coaching and mentorship.
  • Interact with the Project Lead, Mechanical Assembly Team Leads, and Project Managers to effectively communicate project status, issues, risks, scope management items, forecasts, and challenges.
  • Provide support during the manufacturing and build stages including troubleshooting, problem solving, and debugging to overcome any issues or challenges.
  • Assist with improving the Mechanical Design group through initiatives and improvements.

  • If selected as a Mechanical Project Lead, the Senior Mechanical Designer will drive project design direction, oversee and delegate tasks to other Mechanical Designers, participate in project meetings with internal team members and the customer, manage project budgets and schedule, and be responsible for the success of the mechanical design portion of the project.
Qualifications and Experience
  • 10+ years experience in Mechanical Design.
  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in mechanical, electrical, or software controls technology, and at least eight years relevant work experience in mechanical design.
  • Strong concept design capability, in life science assembly systems.
  • Experienced with complex mechanism design (high speed servo pick and place systems, robotics)
  • Knowledge of asynchronous & synchronous transport systems
  • Proficient with life science design requirements, material selection, tolerance stack up, and component selection based on functional design needs and requirements.
  • Direct experience in an automation design role including strong aptitude of 3D CAD design, 2D drawings, and on-the-floor equipment troubleshooting.
  • Strong communication capabilities -able to effectively communicate project status, issues, risks, scope management items and forecasts
  • Confident performing engineering calculations to analyze equipment parameters pertaining to force, movement, energy, and timings
  • Passion to motivate / develop team members while acting as a mentor to promote Convergix values
  • Tenacity to solve problems and take ownership of solutions with a sense of urgency
  • Proficient with life science design requirements, material selection, tolerance stack up, and component selection based on functional design needs and requirements.
  • Experience with cycle time analysis/simulations, process and flow breakdowns, and the development of critical requirements / specifications to drive design solutions.
  • Knowledge in pneumatics, hydraulics, electrical components (motors, sensors, etc.),
  • Familiarity and/or proficiency with Autodesk Inventor, Autodesk Vault Pro, SolidWorks, PDM, AutoCAD
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings.
  • Experience with compliance to equipment design standards (i.e. ISO, ANSI, CSA, OSHA, CE, etc.)
  • GAMP 5 experience
  • Ability to explain detailed engineering concepts and ideas to a wide audience of people.
  • An ability to travel; Mechanical Designers should have the ability to travel within US and Canada, as well as to the UK at least annually.
