This role can be based in either our London (E20 1JQ) or Manchester (M1 3BN) office.

Main duties of the job

Key responsibilities include:

  • Contribute to the development of economic plans identifying cost-effectiveness issues and detailing the appropriate selection of priorities for new economic analyses
  • Undertake systematic reviews to identify, appraise and summarise published economic analyses for presentation to guideline committees and inclusion in guideline documentation
  • Undertake original economic modelling
  • Support the health economics adviser in responding to technical queries that arise during guideline development
  • Support the health economics adviser in reviewing draft scopes and economic plans/protocols with the aim of supporting guideline developers in the identification of cost-effectiveness issues and the appropriate selection of priorities for new economic analyses
  • Support the health economics adviser in reviewing draft guidance to assess whether economic methods are appropriate and whether appraisal and interpretation of economic evidence supports recommendations
  • Contribute to the development of appropriate methods and processes for assessing evidence, research/evaluation and other outputs
  • Provide technical expertise to colleagues within the Directorate and across other Directorates at NICE or to external colleagues

The Health Economics and Decision Modelling Team provides input throughout the development of a guideline, including scoping, conducting evidence reviews, developing economic models and validation. The team also fosters further development of methods in areas identified as priorities such as evidence synthesis, model validation and grading the quality of evidence.

Job responsibilities & Requirements

To be considered for this role, you should be able to particularly demonstrate the person specification criteria in the job advert in your application. However, applicants should be able to demonstrate all essential criteria through the entirety of the recruitment process to be considered for the job.

Qualifications
  • Masters degree or Doctorate in a numerate subject or subjects with relevance to evidence-based decision-making (e.g. economics, public health, mathematics, operational research, data science) or equivalent level of knowledge acquired through experience and further training/development
Experience
  • Experience of conducting economic evaluation in health care, including the development of economic models to inform guideline development
Experience
  • Substantial experience of Excel and at least one software package for the implementation of decision models (e.g. Visual Basic for Applications, R, WinBUGS, Simul8, Arena)
Knowledge
  • Working knowledge of all of the following areas and specialist expertise in at least one of them (one area of specialist expertise must be in health economics): Economics, Mathematical modelling, Statistics, Clinical trials, Social care, Epidemiology, Systematic reviewing, Operational research, Data science
Knowledge
  • Understanding of guideline development, health technology assessment and/or public health research and assessment methods
Knowledge
  • An understanding of the work of NICE, and the social, political, economic and technical context within which the NHS operates
