The Senior Executive Planner is a senior position within the Planning Department of Kerry County Council. Reporting to the Senior Planner and/or other employee nominated by the Chief Executive, the Senior Executive Planner will be responsible for management and delivery of services, implementation of local policy decisions, and delivering on strategic corporate objectives in accordance with the general policy direction of the elected council at both full Council and Municipal District level.

The role of Senior Executive Planner in a local authority is an excellent opportunity to engage with the active delivery of strategic policy and contribute to a multi-disciplinary approach to all elements of the planning function. This is a management role and managers at this level work within defined parameters relevant to the position, in accordance with the local authority's vision and objectives as set out in its Corporate Plan. Delivery of efficient services and value for money is crucial. The Senior Executive Planner will be required to work closely with the Senior Management Team and Elected Members to deliver the full range of services, implement local policy decisions and deliver on strategic corporate objectives and in accordance with the general policy direction of the elected council.

Main Duties of the Job

To manage and supervise a multidisciplinary team of technical and administration staff and to ensure the effective training, development and upskilling of employees.

To manage, coordinate and agree work programmes, targets and deadlines, prioritising work and ensuring their subsequent implementation; for the delivery of an efficient development management system, including pre-planning and enforcement within the County.

To set targets, objectives, reporting and key performance indicators and to assist with the development of corporate plans, strategies and annual service plans.

To promote efficient ways of working and the adoption and implementation of new technology and systems.

Kerry County Council is the Authority responsible for Local Government in County Kerry. The Council headquarters are located at Áras an Chontae, Rathass, Tralee County Kerry and there are five Municipal Districts Municipal District of Tralee, Municipal District of Killarney, Municipal District of Listowel, Municipal District of Kenmare and Municipal District of Castleisland-Corca Dhuibhne . Kerry County Council has 33 elected members and approximately 1500 staff.

Kerry boasts both vibrant urban centres and active rural communities, a highly skilled workforce and is home to global companies across the technology, pharmaceutical, food, financial services and other sectors. Its two largest urban centres of Tralee & Killarney are of significant importance to the county. County Kerry also retains its vital role as a premier international sustainable tourism destination.

An opportunity now exists in Kerry County Council for the position of Senior Executive Planner.

Salary Scale effective from 1st February 2026:

Hours of attendance will be fixed from time to time but will amount to not less than 35 hours gross per week.

The annual leave allowance for the position of Senior Executive Planner is 30 days.
