This is a great opportunity for Senior Engineers to join a Local Authority at a time of transformation. Reporting to a Director of Service, the Senior Engineer is charged with the efficient management, direction and development of the directorates/department and function to which they are assigned. This is a Senior Management role. Managers at this level work within defined parameters relevant to the position, in accordance with the local authority's vision and objectives. The Senior Engineer will be required to work closely with elected Councillors to deliver the full range of services and implement local policy decisions.

In the current economic climate, senior managers are charged with service delivery and change management in an environment of limited resource availability, both human and financial. Delivery of efficient services and value for money is crucial.

Main Duties of the Job

To determine the nature, level and pattern of demand for the service in the directorate/function and to recommend both service level and strategic policy priorities to the Director of Service.

To implement the agreed strategies to meet and to expand or improve the range, quantity or quality of existing services and to recommend changes in strategies as required.

The implementation of capital projects in areas such as transportation, water, wastewater, housing, environmental services etc.

To promote safe work practices in the local authority generally and to ensure that all works in the areas for which you have responsibility are carried out in line with health safety and welfare legislation and regulation.

Information about the organisation

The Local Government sector in Ireland is made up of 31 Local Authorities. Local Authorities are the closest and most accessible form of Government to citizens. They have responsibility for the delivery of a wide range of services in their local area with a focus on making cities, towns and the countryside areas attractive places to live, work and invest. These services generally include housing; transportation planning; infrastructure; environmental protection; recreation and amenity provision and community development. Local Authorities also play a key role in supporting economic development and enterprise promotion at local level.

An opportunity now exists in Kilkenny Count Council for the position of Senior Engineer.

Salary Scale effective from 1st June 2026:

Hours of attendance will be fixed from time to time but will amount to not less than 35 hours gross per week.

The annual leave allowance for the position of Senior Engineer is 30 days.
