Senior Endoscopy Fellow - Advanced Diagnostic & Therapeutic Colonoscopy

The post is embedded within the Advanced Complex Polyp Service in Cardiff, which supports both the local symptomatic service and the national bowel screening programme. Cardiff is a tertiary centre for the management of complex polyps within the Bowel Screening Wales programme and hosts the National Referral Centre for complex polyp management. The service has a well established and longstanding structured complex polyp multidisciplinary team (MDT), supporting both locally referred symptomatic cases and nationally referred screening related complex polyps.

This post is aimed at senior gastroenterology trainees (ST5+ or equivalent) or post CCT clinicians who are independently accredited (JAG certified or equivalent) in diagnostic colonoscopy and practising independently. This fellowship is suitable for trainees undertaking an out of programme experience (OOPE) and may contribute to recognised elements of higher specialty training, subject to approval by the relevant training programme director. Applicants should demonstrate competence in standard colonoscopic polypectomy, a clear interest in advanced lesion assessment and complex polyp management and would suit individuals interested in achieving future accreditation for bowel cancer screening.

The role combines defined service delivery with structured mentoring and supervised exposure to advanced therapeutic endoscopy within a high volume tertiary unit.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will undertake a minimum of three service endoscopy lists per week, with an additional list every alternate week (equivalent to 3.5 service lists weekly on average).

In addition, the Fellow will participate in dedicated mentored endoscopy sessions and support the Endotherapy MDT for symptomatic complex polyp cases, contributing to structured lesion assessment and case discussion and experience significant learning opportunities related to complex decision making in these settings.

Alternate week outpatient clinics will be timetabled, providing exposure to complex polyp assessment, multidisciplinary decision making and management planning. Two programmed sessions per week will be protected for audit, research and quality improvement activity. The postholder will be expected to complete at least one project during the placement and to submit work for presentation at a national meeting and publication where appropriate.

Qualifications

• MBBS Or Equivalent
• Full GMC Registration (with License to Practice)
• GCP (Good Clinical Practice) Certificated
• European Specialty Examination in Gastroenterology

Experience

• Full JAG Accreditation in Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy
• Demonstration of Endoscopy Key Performance Indicators within JAG standards
• To be eligible for appointment at the ST5+ level within this role you are required to have completed Specialty Registrar or equivalent training to ST5+ level passing the associated competencies
• Exposure to advanced endoscopy techniques
• Certificate of attendance at JAG Train the trainers course
