Job Description

NOTE:Please be advised that the start date for the successful candidate will be into the new financial year (May 2026 onwards). The exact timing will be confirmed at offer stage.

The post holder will be a senior member of the Radiotherapy Physics technical staff, providing a highly specialized clinical technical service to the United Lincolnshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

We use Eclipse planning for external beam for our 3 Varian TrueBeams, we are currently working through a commissioning program for a Varian Halcyon. Our LDR and HDR brachytherapy service covers both prostate and gynae.

This individual will be responsible for independently delineating organs at risk (OAR) and target volumes on radiotherapy planning images, following established protocols within their specific anatomical site specialty. Taking clinical responsibility for delineations, even outside of established protocols.

The post holder will play a lead role in delivering routine radiotherapy physics services, making decisions related to advanced and complex planning, including adaptive radiotherapy. They will also assist in developing high standards of service delivery in line with national guidelines within their area of expertise.

Main duties of the job
  • In liaison with others, manage the organisation of routine clinical Radiotherapy Physics services to ensure that planning and mould room services are delivered in a high quality, timely manner.
  • Apply specialist knowledge autonomously to assess, plan, and implement management plans within defined practice scope.
  • Work in partnership with clinicians and patients to provide specialist knowledge and support throughout the patient pathway including contribution to MDT and by ensuring optimal target coverage through adaptive planning.
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary radiotherapy plan review groups on behalf of Radiotherapy Physics to discuss immobilisation and planning solutions.
  • Use complex treatment planning software to produce and check external beam radiotherapy plans, following competence levels, standards, and procedures.
  • Provide technical advice in Treatment Planning and Mould Room to dosimetrists, clinical oncologists, and radiographers on planning solutions.
  • Operate imaging and radiotherapy equipment for daily run-up, QC tasks, and required dosimetry validation measurements.
  • Contribute to developing new radiotherapy techniques, including evaluating immobilisation systems, planning methods, and performing linac-based dosimetric measurements.

Qualifications
  • A degree in a relevant subject (e.g. Clinical Technology, Physics, Radiography) or other appropriate subject
  • A Diploma from the College of Radiography & 1 years experience
  • Education to Masters level (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline
  • Membership of a relevant professional register: Register of Clinical Technologists
  • HCPC
  • Academy of Healthcare Science register of Healthcare Science Practitioners
  • Evidence of CPD
Previous Experience
  • Advanced knowledge and significant experience in use of outlining tools on radiotherapy Treatment Planning Systems
  • Experience and knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology relevant to the area of work to enable accurate outlining of radiotherapy volumes required for treatment planning
  • Experience and knowledge of treatment planning verification and checking procedures
  • Experience of undertaking radiotherapy quality assurance/control procedures
  • Previous CT planning experience Involvement in the implementation of new techniques / technology
Evidence of Knowledge, Skills and Aptitudes.
  • Advanced knowledge of radiotherapy imaging modalities and their application to the planning process
  • Advanced in-depth knowledge and understanding of the application of physical and engineering sciences to medicine
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, standards and safety principles relating to the working area
  • Ability to work in Mould Room, requiring high level of manual dexterity (unless excluded due to a protected characteristic)
  • Demonstrable capability in relaying information to other staff groups, dealing with technical queries autonomously when required
  • Ability to analyse and interpret complex dosimetry
  • Able to plan their own and others work, ensuring efficient progress of plans through department
  • Supervise, mentor, train staff in radiotherapy target and organ at risk outlining
  • A motivated, enthusiastic team worker but with ability to work independently
  • Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills
