GUY'S AND ST. THOMAS' HOSPITAL NHS FOUNDATION TRUST

Interventional Radiology Department

Nodal Point - 5 - £73,992 p.a excluding LZ

Full Time - 40 hours per week

Fixed Term - 12 months

The Interventional Radiology (IR) department within the Clinical Imaging and Medical Physics (CLIMP) Directorate at Guy's and St Thomas' is one of the largest and most diverse in England. A team of 11 IR consultants supported by a dedicated nursing, radiographic and administrative team provide comprehensive vascular, interventional oncological, renal and paediatric clinical service. The department has a vacancy for the position of Clinical Fellow in Interventional Radiology for a period of 1 year.

The post does not attract a UK National Training Number. Applicants must be GMC registered and demonstrate an ethos that promotes teamwork, flexibility and commitment to the service. In return the department can offer a range of learning opportunities and the chance to contribute to service improvement and developments. The postholder will have regular contact with vulnerable adults and/or children (0-18 years) and therefore this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.

Main duties of the job

Clinical: The post holder will, together with colleagues, be responsible for the provision of Interventional Radiology services to the Guy's & St Thomas' NHS Hospital and Evelina Children's Hospital to include:

  • Diagnosis and treatment of patients of the trust in such hospitals, health centres or clinics or other premises as required.
  • Performing the spectrum of IR procedures undertaken at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital NHS Trust and the Evelina Children's Hospital.
  • Assessing patients in dedicated clinics.
  • Carrying out ward rounds.
  • Chairing multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Reporting CTA/MRA, cross-sectional imaging relevant to IR and general diagnostic radiology examinations.
  • Participating in a 1 in 6 IR fellows on-call rota.

Job responsibilities

As the acute site it provides patient care in Surgery, Medicine, Emergency, obstetrics and elderly care, a forty two bed ITU, three HDUs as well as busy outpatient Department.

The Radiology Department is in 3 main locations:

1. Main Department: 3 multislice CTs (one dual source Siemens Force), 1 1.5T MRI, 2 Endovascular/Interventional Radiology Suites, multiple Digital Radiography rooms, 3 Ultrasound Rooms, 1 fluoroscopy room.

2. Emergency Department: Recently upgraded as part of a four year programme to transform the Emergency Floor of STH and completed in 2018. The Imaging area now comprises 3 digital imaging rooms, a multi slice dual source Siemens Force CT scanner, an Ultrasound space and Reporting room.

3. Women's Department is situated at St Thomas in excess of 5000 deliveries per annum and is supported by Gynae and Obstetric Ultrasound.

Guy's Site The main services based at Guy's include elective orthopaedic, urological and renal dialysis and transplant services and a large oncology service. There is one large Imaging Department split over two floors and it comprises: Digital radiography rooms, 1 fluoroscopy room, 1 interventional radiology suite, 2 1.5T MRI, 2 3T MRI, 2 multi slice CT scanners. 3 Colour Doppler ultrasound machines with outreach to Urology services in a dedicated facility. A purpose built breast unit encompassing 2 digital mammography units, 2 stereotactic biopsy units, and 3 dedicated ultrasound machines and separate reception facilities.

Person Specification Qualifications and Training
  • Full GMC Registration and hold a licence to practise
  • CCT in Radiology or equivalent
  • FRCR or equivalent
  • MD and/or PhD
  • EBIR
Clinical Experience
  • Clinical experience in Interventional radiology
  • Clinical experience in CTA/MRA reporting
Knowledge and Skills
  • Able to prioritise clinical needs by applying sound medical knowledge
  • Ability to work as an effective member of a multidisciplinary team
  • Sound knowledge of critical appraisal of scientific literature
  • Evidence of presentations at national and/or international meetings
  • Clinical audit
  • Knowledge of database management, raw data analysis and medical statistics
Research and Teaching
  • Understanding the principles and applications of clinical research
  • Experience of undergraduate teaching and postgraduate training
  • Previous research experience in Radiology
  • Teaching qualification
