Senior Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Spinal Surgery

Position to start in October 2026

£73,992 per annum plus London Zone. Full-time - 40 hours per week. Fixed-term - 12 months.

The Paediatric Spinal Surgery Department at the Evelina London Children's Hospital offers a tertiary Children's Spinal Service for South London and associated counties. The Paediatric Spinal Department has complex spinal surgical procedures.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will, under the relevant consultants be responsible for the provision of orthopaedic service to the Guy's & St Thomas' Hospital Trust. This will include:

  • eveloping skills in the assessment and management of spinal patients in acute and elective children's services.
  • To further enhance practical skills in children's spinal surgery.
  • To undertake theatre lists and outpatient clinics with or without supervision.
  • To gain understanding and appreciation of the contributions of the other disciplines involved in children's orthopaedic care in a multidisciplinary setting which is sensitive to the needs of the patient and his or her family.

You will join a team of 5 Consultants and 2 specialist orthopaedic nurses and will be expected to provide an elective spinal service in conjunction with colleagues. You will be expected to participate in clinical and other service activities with the object of ensuring a high standard of patient care, to take an active part in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training, and to contribute to the management of the clinical service and service development. The Department is keen to help the post holder to develop their area(s) of clinical interest and has a flexible approach in this regard.

This is a non on call post but you will be required to support with weekend ward rounds. This means that some staff groups will increasingly be asked to work a more flexible shift pattern so that we can offer services in the evenings or at weekends.

Person Specification Qualification & Training
  • Full GMC Registration
  • FRCS(Tr and Ortho) or equivalent
  • Eligibility to work in the UK
  • Full GMC Registration on Specialist Register
Clinical Experience
  • Extensive clinical experience in Spinal surgery
  • Previous experience in children's Spinal surgery
  • Log book that documents children's Spinal operative experience
  • Previous experience of paediatric Spinal in a specialist children's hospital
  • Previous fellowship in children's Spinal surgery
  • Ability to work as an effective member of a multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to communicate effectively and well with children and parents
  • Ability to learn from instruction and from self directed learning
  • Sound judgement and decision making
  • Attendance on specialised paediatric Spinal courses
  • Attendance at national/international paediatric Spinal meetings
  • Membership of Paediatric Spinal Societies
Research & Audit
  • Understanding of the principles and applications of clinical research/audit
  • Evidence of original research/academic activity
  • Evidence of completion of audit
  • Evidence of original research/academic activity in paediatric orthopaedics
  • Evidence of completion of audit in paediatric orthopaedics
Teaching
  • Experience of teaching
  • Postgraduate qualification in teaching
  • Teaching certificate (eg 'Train the Trainer Course' or equivalent)
Management
  • Evidence of participation in quality improvement projects
  • Understanding of the role of management in regional service provision
  • Evidence of participation in quality improvement projects in paediatric Spinal
Other
  • Evidence of understanding of and adherence to the principles of Good Medical Practice set out by the General Medical Council.
