Senior Clinical Fellow in Critical Care - Research

We are recruiting to a 12 month Specialist Fellow in Research in Adult Critical Care at Nottingham University Hospitals, starting in August 2026.

The post is open to all doctors who hold Full/limited registration with the GMC and have successfully completed Foundation Year 2 training plus a further two years in the acute specialities (must have at least 24 months of UK Anaesthesia experience).

This post uniquely allows the post holder to be integral to the planning, delivery and dissemination of clinical trial research conducted at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. It is anticipated that the successful applicant will gain direct experience of all components of the research life cycle.

The successful candidate will be based in the Critical Care department but will have two days per week allocated to research activities, the details of which will be discussed at interview.

Main duties of the job Clinical
  • Perform daily reviews on ICU patients and present findings on the MDT ward round, with a focus on our major trauma patient population within adult critical care.
  • In conjunction with consultant support, provide clinical decision making guidance to junior medical and nursing staff as the senior member of the critical care team.
  • Review critically unwell patients outside of critical care.
  • Admit, stabilise and formulate an initial management plan for critically unwell adults.
  • Competently initiate ventilation, use vasopressors, insert CVC and arterial lines, and be able to transfer the critically unwell patient.
Research
  • Plan, deliver and disseminate clinical trial research conducted at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.
  • Design, draft and refine clinical trial protocols as a named co investigator.
  • Produce supporting trial materials such as consent and patient information sheets, working with patients and the public to ensure accessibility.
  • Submit trial protocol and materials for peer, sponsor, NHS Research Ethics Committee and local R+I review and approval.
  • Design clinical trial case report forms for acquisition of research data.
  • Participate in monthly Trial Management Group Meetings alongside clinical, research and management colleagues.
  • Identify potential participants with colleagues, screen for eligibility, provide information and obtain informed written consent for clinical trial participation.
  • Attend research visits with participants for real time data acquisition.
  • Input into the cleaning, analysis and presentation of data and research findings via lay media, scientific conferences and scientific publications.
  • Work under the mentorship of Dr David Hewson/Dan Harvey, Associate Professor of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine, University of Nottingham.
Other
  • Support the learning and development of other members of the critical care team (including undergraduates).
  • Participate in clinical governance and quality improvement.
  • Supervise and provide educational opportunities within both Critical Care departments.
  • Attend regular educational meetings each week, including journal clubs, ITU rounds and morbidity meetings.
  • Attend a monthly protected teaching day for Fellows covering clinical aspects of critical care, and optional teaching days covering generic non clinical topics (e.g. ethics, medical law, professionalism, interview skills).
  • Access departmental libraries and IT facilities at both sites.
  • Explore research opportunities by special arrangement.

Person Specification Training and qualifications
  • MB ChB or equivalent. Full/limited GMC registration.
  • Successful completion of FY2 training in an NHS setting plus two years of post foundation training in acute specialities (Anaesthesia, Acute Medicine, Emergency Medicine or ICM).
  • Primary FRCA or equivalent higher qualification, ALS or equivalent accredited life support course, ATLS or other trauma course.
Experience
  • Two years of post foundation training in acute specialities (Anaesthesia, Acute Medicine, Emergency Medicine or ICM) in an NHS hospital.
  • Completion of Stage 1 Anaesthesia or ICM training or equivalence formally signed off with ROCA / FFICM Stage Certificate.
  • Completion of Audit Cycle or quality improvement project, Published research.
  • Other evidence of academic achievement including additional qualifications, prizes.
  • Two years' experience of anaesthesia in the UK.
  • Twelve months experience of internal medicine in the UK.
  • Twelve months of previous critical care medicine in the UK.
  • Stage 2 Anaesthesia or ICM Trainee.
Analytical and judgement skills
  • Evidence of continuous career development, including evidence of attendance at meetings/ courses.
  • Evidence of competence in clinical tasks.
  • Attendance at meetings/ courses/ membership of professional bodies.
  • Competence in bronchoscopy, lung ultrasound, focused echocardiography.
Interpersonal skills
  • Evidence of good written communication, successful team worker, sensitivity to needs of patients and colleagues.
  • Evidence of formal Human Factors training.
Planning and organisational skills
  • Evidence of having completed a Leadership or Management Course.
Other requirements
  • Punctuality, professional appearance and attitudes consistent with GMC guidelines.
  • Values and behaviours in line with NUH standards.
  • Demonstrates non medical interests / activities.
  • Completed GCP training.
  • Have experience of leading, designing or recruiting to research projects.
