This new post is an important part of our ongoing development of services at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust, offering the successful applicant the opportunity to work closely with the existing colleagues to provide a high standard of care across the Trust, as well as to participate in a unique new exciting Anglo-Dutch Training collaboration.
Applications are invited for a Fixed Term Anglo-Dutch Hand Fellow position for 12 months. The Hand Fellow post is ideal for Plastics Surgery and Orthopaedic Surgery Senior trainees who wish to further develop their subspecialty experience in the field of Hand and Wrist Surgery. The post has arisen due to the successful collaboration between the Lister Hand Unit and the Hand unit of the University Medical Centre (UMC) Utrecht, The Netherlands.
Main duties of the jobThe post holder will work closely with the Consultant Hand Surgeons and will be exposed to the full spectrum of elective and emergency hand and wrist surgery at the Trust. They will be encouraged to participate in the research, audit, service improvement and teaching activity within the Hand Surgery Department and expected to complete and publish a minimum of 1 research publication, by the end of their tenure.
The Fellow will also be expected to undertake the BSSH Diploma in Hand Surgery, and/or the European Board of Hand Surgery Diploma Examinations. This will be encouraged and supported by supervision from the Consultant staff and their assigned Educational Supervisor. The lead Consultant Supervisor is a BSSH-approved Diploma Supervisor and Tutor.
With experience there will be opportunities to undertake certain unsupervised operating lists and clinics. The Fellow will be the key member of the Trauma pathway, responsible for facilitating daily Traumalists as a Trauma coordinator.

Person Specification Qualifications / Training- Entry on GMC Specialist Register or, be within 6 months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview or, provide GMC confirmed eligibility for entry on the Specialist Register
- MBBS or qualification of an equivalent level
- FRCS (Plast) (Ortho) or qualification of an equivalent level
- Evidence of attainment or commitment to enroll in the European or British Hand surgery Diploma /similar
- Postgraduate academic degree
- ATLS
- Able to demonstrate commitment and experience in Plastic Surgery training, in particular: Hand surgery of varying complexity including fractures, limb reconstruction, trauma and microsurgery
- Ability to offer and be accountable for, full and independent expert diagnostic opinion
- Demonstrates an interest and commitment to the hand Surgery specialty
- NHS experience
- Experience of audit
- Up to date and fit to practice safely and aware of own training needs.
- Evidence of engagement with appraisal and revalidation
- Able to evidence engagement with clinical governance and the identification of errors and the learning from errors
- Able to show situational awareness and application of good decision making
- Can evidence leading on patient safety issues and achieving a change in practice
- Experience of supervising undergraduates, doctors in training and other colleagues
- Ability to teach clinical skills
- Experience in organising educational activities.
- Understanding of, and commitment to, equality, diversity and inclusion
