Job Description
Job summary

Berkson Family Law is a long-established Liverpool practice specialising exclusively in children and family law under the Legal Aid scheme.
We are seeking an experienced Senior Clerk / Managing Clerk to provide day-to-day leadership of our clerking team, ensuring efficient case progression, excellent client service, and consistent fee generation.

This is a senior post combining supervisory responsibility with active fee-earning . You will oversee the workflow of junior clerks and paralegals, monitor time recording, encourage performance, and personally contribute to fee-earning through case preparation and procedural work.

Key responsibilities

Lead and motivate the team of clerks and junior paralegals.
Allocate and oversee daily workflow and bundle preparation.
Monitor time recording, productivity, and billing performance.
Provide procedural guidance and mentoring on Legal Aid family work.
Undertake fee-earning activities: drafting applications, statements, and client correspondence; preparing Legal Aid documentation; assisting solicitors with hearings.
Conduct file checks and ensure LAA and SRA compliance.
Report weekly to management on performance, billing, and team development.

About you

Minimum 3 years' experience in a Legal Aid family or children law environment.
Proven ability to supervise or mentor junior staff.
Confident knowledge of Legal Aid billing, file management, and family procedure .
Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to balance leadership and personal fee-earning effectively.
Professional, approachable, and capable of motivating others.
