Key Responsibilities

Teaching & Learning

  • Implement creative, practical, and therapeutic approaches to learning.
  • Assess pupil progress and adapt teaching methods accordingly.
  • Provide a consistent and predictable approach to behaviour and routines.

Behaviour & Wellbeing Support

  • Use de-escalation strategies and trauma-informed practice.
  • Build trusting, positive relationships with pupils who may display challenging behaviours.
  • Support pupils in developing emotional literacy, resilience, and coping strategies.
  • Contribute to individual behaviour plans, risk assessments, and EHCP targets.

Collaboration

  • Work closely with support staff, therapists, pastoral teams, and external agencies.
  • Communicate effectively with parents/carers regarding progress and behaviour.
  • Attend meetings including reviews, training, and multi-agency discussions.

Safeguarding

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of safeguarding and child protection policies.
  • Report concerns promptly and appropriately.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS/QTLS).
  • Experience teaching pupils with SEMH, behavioural needs or complex SEND.
  • Strong behaviour management skills and a calm, empathetic approach.
  • Ability to create engaging lessons that inspire reluctant learners.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.

Desirable

  • Experience in alternative provisions, PRUs, or specialist settings.
  • Training in Team Teach, PRICE, MAPA, or other de-escalation methods.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed practice and restorative approaches.

What the School Offers

  • Small class sizes with high staff-to-pupil ratios.
  • Supportive and skilled multidisciplinary teams.
  • Regular CPD and opportunities to specialise further in SEMH.
  • A nurturing, therapeutic working environment focused on holistic development.
