SEMH Teaching Assistant

Location: Walton, Surrey
Hours: Full-time, Monday-Friday, 08:00-15:30
Salary: Paid to scale
We are seeking a dedicated SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) Teaching Assistant to support pupils with complex emotional and behavioural needs in a dynamic primary setting. The successful candidate will work closely with teachers, therapists, and external agencies to create a safe, inclusive learning environment that promotes wellbeing and academic progress.
Key Responsibilities- Provide one-to-one and small-group support for pupils with SEMH difficulties, implementing agreed-upon strategies and interventions.
- Assist the class teacher in delivering differentiated lessons, adapting resources to meet individual needs.
- Monitor and record pupil behaviour, progress, and attendance; contribute to IEPs and risk assessments.
- Foster positive relationships, modelling coping skills and resilience techniques.
- Liaise with parents, senior staff, and external professionals to ensure coordinated care.
- Support the implementation of school-wide SEMH policies and safeguarding procedures.
- Participate in regular CPD and team meetings, sharing insights and best practices.
- Level 3 or higher Teaching Assistant qualification (or equivalent).
- Proven experience supporting children with SEMH or SEND needs.
- Strong understanding of child development, trauma-informed practice, and behaviour management.
- Excellent communication, empathy, and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
- DBS clearance (or eligibility to obtain).
- Training in CBT, mindfulness, or related therapeutic approaches.
- Experience working within a multi-disciplinary team.
