RPG Developer - Banking

Excellent opportunity to join a major UK bank, working on a critical core platform running on IBM i. This is a hands-on role for a genuinely strong RPG/IBMi engineer who can go beyond coding into system-level understanding, performance, and security.

You'll be working on a live, business-critical environment, owning development, enhancement, and support of key applications, with real visibility across both technology and business stakeholders.

• Design and develop high-quality RPG solutions (fixed and free format)
• Translate business requirements into technical design and user stories
• Work closely with architecture and business teams on new functionality
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex production issues using joblogs, journals, and OS-level tooling
• Evaluate and improve existing applications (performance, structure, maintainability)
• Contribute to Agile ceremonies (Show & Tell, sprint delivery, etc.)
• Produce technical documentation and user guidance
• Support critical systems, including occasional out-of-hours work

Strong, hands-on experience with:

• RPG development on IBM i
• Deep understanding of IBMi internals (not just coding)
• SQL (standalone and Embedded) with performance tuning capability
• Debugging and forensic analysis across joblogs, journals, and system logs
• Modern RPG techniques (modules, service programs, activation groups)

You should also have exposure to:

• System security concepts (authorities, user profiles, access control)
• Journalling, recovery, and audit mechanisms
• Performance tuning and system-level optimisation
• Agile delivery environments

Nice to have:

• Experience supporting critical, high-availability systems
• Exposure to Citrix or infrastructure-level considerations
