To deliver professional, proportionate, and effective investigations into retail crime, ensuring high standards of evidence gathering, victim care, and case progression in accordance with PIP Level 1 requirements.

This is an opportunity to play a key role in tackling high-volume offending and offenders, protecting local businesses, and improving outcomes for victims. You will investigate a range of offences including theft, fraud, criminal damage, and assaults linked to retail environments.

Working as part of a dedicated team, you will contribute to targeting prolific offenders, reducing repeat victimisation, and supporting wider neighbourhood priorities.

This role will also include attendance at court when required.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct professional and proportionate investigations into retail crime offences
  • Gather and secure evidence, including CCTV, witness statements, and exhibits
  • Identify and develop reasonable lines of enquiry
  • Interview suspects and witnesses in accordance with PACE
  • Prepare case files in line with the National File Standard
  • Use intelligence to identify repeat offenders and linked offences
  • Work in partnership with retailers, security teams, and local partners
  • Provide a high standard of victim care in line with the Victims' Code

Key Skills & Experience Required - Essential Criteria Qualifications & Training
  • Accredited PIP Level 1 Investigator under the Professionalising Investigations Programme.
  • Knowledge of:
  • Criminal law relevant to retail crime (e.g. Theft Act, Fraud Act)
  • CPIA and disclosure requirements
  • National File Standard
Experience
  • Experience of investigating volume crime or similar offences
  • Demonstrable experience of:
  • Gathering and recording evidence (CCTV, statements, exhibits)
  • Interviewing suspects and witnesses
  • Case file preparation for criminal justice outcomes
  • Experience of working with partners (e.g. retailers, security teams, local agencies)
Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to apply a structured investigative approach
  • Competent in identifying reasonable lines of enquiry
  • Ability to manage multiple investigations effectively
  • Ability to identify patterns of offending
  • Use of information and intelligence to support investigations
Communication Skills
  • Clear and effective written communication (statements, case files)
  • Ability to communicate professionally with victims, witnesses, and partners
  • Skilled in conducting suspect interviews in line with PACE
Organisational Skills
  • Effective time management and prioritisation
  • Ability to progress cases within set timelines
Other Requirements
  • Ability to work flexibly, including shifts where required
  • Competent in the use of IT systems and digital evidence platforms
  • Experience dealing with retail or business crime
  • Knowledge of prolific offender management
  • Experience working with partners such as Business Improvement Districts (BIDs)
  • Understanding of problem-solving policing approaches

Vetting Level - Recruitment - you must have resided in the UK for at least the last 3 years, with less than 12 months spent abroad (some exceptions for those living on a UK military base).
