Research Assistant in Foodborne Pathogen Surveillance

Position in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Limerick, focusing on sampling fruit and vegetable production sites for laboratory detection of foodborne pathogens (Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella enterica and Shigatoxigenic Escherichia coli) to identify contamination routes and assess risks.
Key Responsibilities- Sample fruit and vegetable products, cultivation environments, and processing/storage facilities at stakeholder sites.
- Perform laboratory-based detection of foodborne pathogens using culturing and molecular techniques.
- Analyse results to identify contamination routes and evaluate risks.
- Engage with stakeholders to present project aims, results and recommendations.
- Contribute to research proposal development and project planning.
- Bachelor's (level 8NFQ) or Master's (level 9NFQ) degree in Biology, Microbiology, Agricultural Sciences, Horticulture or a related field (minimum 2.1 award, completed before start).
- Experience in laboratory research, microbiological techniques (culturing and detection of microorganisms) and molecular biological techniques (DNA extraction, PCR, qPCR).
- +2 years working with microbial pathogens in a laboratory, including selective cultivation and phenotypic identification.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- English - Excellent level.
- MSc or Doctoral degree (level 9 or 10 NFQ) in Biological/Life Sciences, Environmental/Agricultural Sciences or a related field - preferred.
