Job Description
Offer Description

Durham University's Department of Physics invites applications for two research positions: a Research Assistant and a Postdoctoral Research Associate under the ERC Consolidator Grant project X MAPS, starting October 2026. Both roles are 2 year contracts with possible extension, supervised by Dr Adam Ingram.

Role 1: Research Assistant

Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to X MAPS project objectives, including development of fast X ray timing and polarimetry techniques.
  • Train neural networks to replace advanced X ray timing and polarisation models (e.g., RELTRANS).
  • Apply advanced Fourier timing methods to identify rapid spectral and polarimetric variability in black hole X ray binaries.
  • Collaborate with CEA research teams on theoretical modelling of accreting black hole systems.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree in physics, astrophysics or related field.
  • Experience in theoretical modelling of accreting black holes and/or observational X ray timing and polarimetric analysis.
  • Strong programming skills and familiarity with neural network frameworks.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
Role 2: Postdoctoral Research Associate

Responsibilities and qualifications are the same as for the Research Assistant role. Preference is given to applicants with advanced publications in the field.
