Registered Nurse Emergency Department

As a Registered General Nurse, your main role will be:

To provide a high standard of individualized nursing care in accordance with agreed policies, through assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care for individual patients.

To teach learners and other nursing staff in the ward environment.

Main duties of the job

To perform agreed nursing practice without direct supervision and maintain a high standard of nursing care. Nursing patients with specific A&E problems will be undertaken with guidance from senior staff to develop specialist knowledge and skills.

Maintain individual patient care plans, evaluating and updating them as necessary to meet the patient's physical, social, and psychological needs. Conduct initial assessments of patients arriving in A&E without a diagnosis, with guidance from senior staff. Recognize the need for prioritization but refer to senior staff for assistance.

Learns to develop therapeutic relationships with A&E patients in a short time span.

Supervise and participate in keeping accurate and legible records, being aware of the legal implications of these documents (Ref NMCRules) with date, time, and signature.

Maintain effective communication with nursing colleagues and other professional groups in all aspects of patient care and the ward environment, knowing how, when, and where to suggest changes.

Support the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse in maintaining and developing ward philosophy and objectives.

Job responsibilities

We have flexible bank shifts and long-term placement opportunities for RGN within the Emergency Department at University Hospital Southampton. Pay rates are as follows:

Monday-Friday (days): £19.33/hour

Saturday and Nights: £25.13/hour

Sunday & bank holidays: £30.93/hour

General Duties: Professional Practice:

To provide high-quality patient care by assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating care.

To report on patient progress and immediately notify senior staff of any changes.

To carry out nursing care, treatments, and procedures within policies, including Plaster of Paris application and suturing.

To collaborate with medical staff and other healthcare team members to ensure treatment adherence.

To maintain accurate records and provide information and support to patients and relatives.

To ensure the safe custody of patient belongings.

To participate in medication administration, including controlled drugs, as authorized.

To ensure equipment is operational and report any defects.

To inform senior staff of any incidents or problems affecting patients or staff.

To support fire safety procedures and uphold confidentiality.

Personnel & Professional Development:

To wear the correct uniform, present professionally, and stay updated with clinical developments.

To participate in departmental meetings and promote good working relationships.

Additional Duties:

To have knowledge of cardiac arrest and major incident procedures.

To assist in achieving departmental performance indicators and discharge planning.

Person Specification Qualifications

• Qualified Registered Nurse with valid NMC PIN
• Minimum 6 months' experience in an emergency department within the UK in the past 2 years
