Job Description

The University of Luxembourg is seeking its next Rector for a five-year term of office, renewable once, starting on 1 January 2028.

As the only public university in the Grand Duchy, the University of Luxembourg is an international institution of higher education and research. Its four-year plan sets out three priority areas: digital transformation, medicine and health, and sustainable and societal development.

The future Rector will lead the University into a new stage of its development. The Rector will be expected to:

  • set clear priorities
  • ensure the responsible management of resources
  • strengthen the University's role in Luxembourg while supporting its international ambition

The quality of research and teaching, campus life and the student experience, as well as the attraction and retention of academic staff, will be among the priorities of the term.

The University is looking for a person who combines strong international academic credibility with genuine leadership ability. Approachable and collegial, the Rector will listen to the various parts of the University community and involve them in setting its institutional direction.

In carrying out this role, the Rector will:

  • pursue a strong institutional ambition, combining academic and research excellence, international standing and strong roots in Luxembourg
  • unite the university community around a shared project and strengthen cooperation between the faculties, the interdisciplinary centres and the central administration
  • promote transparency, remain accessible to the university community and clearly define responsibilities within the University
Qualifications and experience

Candidates must:

  • hold the rank of university professor
  • have an internationally recognised record of research excellence
  • have proven skills in management and governance
  • have senior leadership experience at a university or comparable academic institution, gained in an international and multicultural environment

Their career will show:

  • an ability to define and implement an institutional strategy
  • an ability to lead change
  • an ability to work effectively with governing bodies, public authorities and external partners

Candidates must be fluent in French and English, both spoken and written. Knowledge of Luxembourg's institutional and societal environment, or the ability to acquire it quickly, is an asset.

The University of Luxembourg is committed to gender equality in its recruitment procedures.
