Reading & Writing Tutor for a Woman in Supported Living
Posted 2 days 1 hour ago by Jewish Volunteering Network
Help someone we support grow in confidence, connection, and independence! We are looking for a kind and patient volunteer to support a woman in our supported living service who has a learning disability and hearing loss. She is highly motivated to learn to read and write and would benefit greatly from regular one to one support from someone who can build her confidence and adapt learning to her pace and communication needs. She is available any day between 10am and 6pm, so you can choose a weekly hour long time slot that works best for you. We just ask that it's the same time each week to give her the consistency she needs to learn with confidence. This role is perfect for someone who enjoys empowering others, forming meaningful connections, and helping someone achieve a personal goal that is truly important to them.
What Will You Do? (Tasks)
- Provide one to one support and encouragement.
- Support her to learn basic reading and writing skills using simple, accessible methods.
- Adapt lessons to suit her learning style, using visual tools, repetition and clear communication.
- Enunciate clearly and check understanding, taking her hearing loss into account.
- Celebrate progress, build confidence, and help her enjoy the learning process.
You will:
- Boost her confidence and self esteem.
- Help her develop important everyday literacy skills.
- Reduce social isolation through regular, friendly interaction.
- Create a safe and positive space where she feels valued, heard, and supported.
Your time could have a lifelong impact.
What additional skills or experience you should haveYou don't need to be a teacher, just someone who can support another person with patience and empathy. Helpful qualities include:
- A calm, encouraging approach.
- Patience and flexibility in adapting sessions.
- Clear, slow, and considerate speech to support communication with hearing loss.
- Ability to break tasks down into small, achievable steps.
- Reliability and a genuine interest in helping someone learn.
(Any experience with learning disabilities, autism, literacy support, or communication needs is a bonus, but not essential.)
What training we will provide for youWe will support you throughout the process, and introduce you to her service manager to debrief you on everything you need to know! We will also provide training in the following areas:
- Safeguarding
- Autism
- Learning Disability
Volunteering in this role is incredibly rewarding. You will:
- Make a meaningful difference in someone's life.
- Build your confidence, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Gain insight into autism, learning disabilities, and inclusive communication.
- Enjoy a warm, supportive team environment.
- Have a positive, enriching experience that you can take forward in work, study, or personal life.
