The University of Sussex Students' Union is seeking a passionate, organised and inclusive Race Equity Advocate (REA) Coordinator to lead and support our Race Equity Advocates programme.
This is an exciting opportunity to help ensure that the experiences, perspectives and voices of racially marginalised students are heard, valued and embedded within decision-making across the University. Working closely with students, University colleagues and elected officers, you will help strengthen structures that promote equity, inclusion and meaningful student participation.
Reporting to the Advice & Representation Manager, you will coordinate and support the Race Equity Advocates programme, managing a team of 12 student advocates and helping ensure student feedback informs University policy, practice and decision-making. You will play a key role in engaging with diverse student communities, supporting meaningful dialogue and helping to identify barriers faced by marginalised students.
You will build effective partnerships with University faculties, departments and staff to strengthen race equity initiatives, and support structures that ensure independent student feedback is reflected in institutional decision-making. You will engage proactively with students from racially marginalised backgrounds to gather insight and understand lived experiences, and support the development of reports, briefings and recommendations based on student feedback and evidence. You will facilitate discussions relating to race equity, inclusion, social justice and student experience, and work with cultural societies, liberation groups and student leaders to strengthen engagement and collaboration. You will also support communications and awareness-raising activities that celebrate the impact of the programme, and maintain accurate records to ensure effective project administration.
Working on Sussex Campus and for the SU has lots of perks: our full time staff receive one day off each fortnight as part of a nine day fortnight working trial, and access to enhanced time off, which normally amounts to an extra six days of leave in addition to twenty days of annual leave per year, plus bank holidays. We also allocate funding for staff socials, learning and development opportunities for all our roles, and create a supportive workplace through regular one to one meetings, an employee assistance programme and professional health services.
We welcome applications from everyone, and we strongly encourage applications from people with an ethnic minority or Chinese background, people with a disability, people with dependents, and people who identify as LGBTQ+. We conduct anonymous shortlisting and all of our interview panels have Unconscious Bias Training in order to support the above. We also consider flexible working for those with care commitments.
