This role offers a rare and exciting opportunity to be part of the radiotherapy/proton beam therapy (PBT) review team at UCLH. The post holder will undertake rotations between the photon and proton departments. The role involves working within the Radiotherapy/PBT Review Team; reviewing patients during their treatment and supporting them physically and psychologically throughout their radiotherapy journey. They will ensure an appropriate plan for the on treatment review of each patient and a mechanism of communication to the wider MDT. The post holder will help patients understand the treatment process, toxicity and likely side effects of radiotherapy, and provide advice on how to self care and manage their symptoms. Training for on treatment review and independent/supplementary prescribing will be supported. The photon department is equipped with Varian TrueBeam systems; the proton beam therapy department with Varian ProBeam gantries.
Main duties of the job- Deputise for the lead practitioner in their specific field, setting an example to junior staff and advising colleagues in other areas.
- Utilise available skills and competencies within the team effectively and delegate appropriately.
- Prioritise daily tasks, taking into consideration patients' needs and team capacity.
- React and reorganise workload in response to unforeseen circumstances, such as machine breakdown, minimising disruption.
- Run the Review Team services smoothly and effectively in the absence of the Band 7 Sister/Charge Nurse and Band 7 Review Radiographer.
- Work within the quality system at all times; question and propose changes to procedures to maintain validity and appropriateness.
- Make sound, ethical decisions in partnership with patients and other professionals.
- Demonstrate safe use and maintenance of expensive specialist equipment, using quality assurance methods.

Knowledge and Qualifications- Registered Nurse Part 1, 2 or relevant section of the register
- Teaching course
- NVQ assessor
- Qualification in this speciality
- Previous experience at Band 5
- Previous experience in oncology as a speciality
- Communicates effectively verbally, in writing and in electronic formats
- Demonstrates evidence of continuous professional development and maintains an updated portfolio
- Demonstrates an awareness of the role of preceptor / facilitator
- Reflective in practice
- Demonstrates evidence of ability to educate others
- Demonstrates understanding of principles of clinical governance, e.g. risk management, audit & quality
- Prioritises own workload
- Articulates reasons for desire to work in this clinical area
- Able to take charge of a section (aspect of the service) in absence of senior staff
This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
