Job Description
Job Overview

An exciting opportunity for Radiography Department Assistants to join the Radiology Department at Mersey & West Lancashire Teaching Hospital. The post is based primarily at the Whiston and St Helens sites and involves providing assistance during radiographic, CT and MRI procedures, including patient care, IV cannulation and clerical duties.

The role supports a 7 day imaging service and will include evening, weekend and bank holiday duties. Applicants should be keen to learn, enjoy challenges, and possess good communication skills and a caring nature.

Main Duties

Provide assistance during imaging procedures as directed by qualified staff and coordinate inpatient transfer for all imaging modalities.

Key duties include:

  • Assist radiology clinical staff in all imaging examinations.
  • Support the maintenance of high standards of care.
  • Perform intravenous and oral contrast preparation as per departmental protocol.
  • Conduct IV cannulation prior to imaging exams.
  • Position patients for cross sectional imaging including MR coil placement.
  • Coordinate inpatient transfer to and from radiology, liaising with wards and arranging portering.
  • Observe patients in the waiting room and ensure a safe, infection free environment.
  • Maintain cleanliness of clinical equipment and report any malfunction.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, encouraging and supporting them throughout procedures.
  • Perform household support tasks as required.
Professional and Clinical Responsibilities
  • Adhere to all departmental and trust SOPs and policies.
  • Maintain patient privacy and dignity.
Administrative Responsibilities
  • Accurate data entry on the Radiology Information System.
  • Ensure data quality (name, date of birth, address, GP, telephone) is current.
Teaching & Training Responsibilities
  • Assist in induction of new radiography helpers.
  • Attend relevant training courses and maintain personal development.
Research & Audit
  • Participate in departmental audit and research programmes.
Person Specification Qualifications
  • NVQ Level 3 in Care or equivalent experience in Radiology.
Experience
  • Previous care work experience.
Skills
  • Self motivated and able to use initiative.
  • Ability to manage and prioritise workload.
  • Capability to handle difficult or sensitive situations.
  • IT literacy and accurate documentation skills.
  • Teamplayer and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Good understanding of Trust internal policies.
Other Requirements
  • Ability to travel between hospital locations.
  • Willingness to work the required hours and duties.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing requirements.
  • Commitment to quality and confidentiality.
