Principal Purpose of Position: The Product Development Engineer will take a proactive role in leading and supporting product development efforts, optimize soft magnetic material properties and component performance for advanced electromagnetic and electrification applications. The product development engineer will additionally collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive innovation, ensuring quality, and support manufacturing scale-up. The ideal candidate will explore on-going and future advances in magnetics/metallurgy of soft magnetic materials and recommend future directions if there is a business case. Provide subject matter expertise on soft magnetic materials to optimize stack performance, and mentor all levels of staff as needed. Play a lead role in demonstrating and advancing product value proposition and testing, with a concentration on soft magnetic alloys, laminations, and stacks. Further, this position involves extensive customer interfacing, understanding customer specifications and product requirements. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THE PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT ENGINEER: Lead product development and qualification efforts for soft magnetic materials including Hiperco, Hiperm 49, HyMu80 and advanced silicon steels. Interface with customers to understand requirements and provide technical support. Support customer-specific requirements through data analysis, technical documentation, and presentations. Play a lead role in demonstrating and advancing product value proposition and testing, with a concentration on soft magnetic alloys, laminations, and stacks. Document designs, test results, and engineering changes in accordance with ASTM, ISO and internal standards. Design and implement stack manufacturing and product improvements using standard experimental design techniques in a production environment, and use advanced techniques for material characterization and data analysis to accomplish the above Analyze core loss, permeability, and induction data to guide material selection and process optimization. Interact with Carpenter engineering and manufacturing staff at Carpenter facilities to lead and assist with implementation of process capabilities and improvement. Collaborate with manufacturing and quality teams to resolve production issues and improve yield. Support Motor Technology Center production staff with mill projects related to scale up and production of key alloys. Support cost reduction initiatives and continuous improvement efforts. Provide metallurgical expertise on soft magnetic materials to optimize stack performance, and mentor all levels of staff as needed. Explore on-going and future advances in magnetics and metallurgy and recommend future directions if there is a business case. REQUIRED FOR THE PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT ENGINEER: Bachelor's Degree in Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics or related field required, Master's Degree preferred. 2-3+ years of experience in magnetic materials, product engineering, or testing. Familiarity with soft magnetic alloys and lamination stack design. PREFERRED FOR THE PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT ENGINEER: Familiarity with industry standards such as ASTM, IEC, IEEE and MIL specs. Experience in aerospace, automotive, defense and power electronic sectors. Project management skills are essential with demonstrated drive and passion towards project outcomes. Strong analytical skills and experience with data modeling or AI tools is a plus. Ability to provide support, leadership, and guidance to peers, customers, and manager in key projects and opportunities. Ability to work with management to develop and implement strategic plans for the company. Ability to recognize, communicate, measure, and implement actions to mitigate technical risks. Must have experience working in team efforts and must demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills. Working independently and effectively with employees at all levels is essential. Additional requirements include, but are not limited to excellent problem solving, decision-making and strong prioritization skills along with PC proficiency.
