Job Overview

Prison officers at HMP Gartree help protect the public and support prisoners to rebuild their lives. The role is fast paced and offers a range of responsibilities from maintaining security to providing counselling, teaching and support.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain safety and security within the prison.
  • Protect the public by preventing escapes and maintaining order.
  • Engage with prisoners to support positive change and rehabilitation.
  • Deliver teaching or therapeutic programmes where required.
  • Work in shifts, including evenings, nights and weekends.
Qualifications
  • At least 18 years old.
  • Meet the Civil Service nationality requirements.
  • Pass a medical and fitness assessment suitable for a physically demanding job.
  • Meet the required eyesight standard with or without corrective lenses.
  • Have the right to work in the UK; a skilled worker visa may be available but is not guaranteed.
  • Allowed to have visible tattoos provided they are not offensive, violent or intimidating; facial tattoos are generally not acceptable.
Salary

For a 39-hour week (including 20% unsocial) the starting salary is £35,875 per year.

  • 37 hours a week: £33,746
  • 39 hours a week: £35,875
  • 41 hours a week: £38,003

Recruitment Process
