Job Description

At Hilson Moran, we create places that give more than they take - for people, nature, and the planet. As a certified B Corp and leader in sustainable design and consultancy, we're committed to building responsibly through science-led, integrated solutions that enhance biodiversity, climate resilience, and community wellbeing.

We're looking for an experienced ecologist to join our growing team - someone passionate about nature-positive development and the future of sustainable placemaking.

Working within our interdisciplinary Infrastructure & Environment group, you'll collaborate with engineers, transport experts, and environmental scientists on projects ranging from urban regeneration and garden communities to major infrastructure and international masterplans.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead ecological inputs across the project lifecycle - from surveys to mitigation strategies and monitoring.
  • Mentor junior ecologists and foster a collaborative, inclusive culture.
  • Engage with clients and contribute to tenders, proposals, and strategic advice aligned with our Net Positive Places approach.
  • Promote biodiversity net gain, habitat creation, and nature-based solutions in every project.

What We Offer:

  • 25 days annual leave plus public holidays, increasing with service up to 28 days.
  • Enhanced company pension and access to healthcare and wellbeing support.
  • Annual personal wellbeing budget.
  • Paid volunteering days for causes you care about.
  • Cycle to work scheme, season ticket loans, and options for unpaid leave or career breaks.
  • Social events including an annual winter party and full-company summer social.

What We're Looking For:

  • Solid experience with UK habitats and protected species (mitigation licences such as bats preferred).
  • Strong background in EcIA and HRA, and sound knowledge of Biodiversity Net Gain legislation.
  • Skilled at working with planning authorities and regulators to secure consents and apply best practice.
  • Ability to use GIS and data visualisation tools.
  • A degree in Ecology or a related field.

Key Skills:

  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Report writing proficiency and numerical confidence.
