Principal Maritime Structural Engineer

Role Overview

Role Type: Full-time, Permanent - minimum average site attendance of 3 days per week. Role ID: SF19048.

Location: Haslar site, Haslar Marine Technology Park. Hours: 37 per week.

As a Principal FEA Engineer, you will deliver work streams and guide a mixed-discipline engineering team for a large multi-year maritime project. Day to day tasks involve Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of submarine propulsors under quasi static and dynamic conditions, developing and reviewing FEA models, technical reports, design documentation, and approving work packages and drawings.

Responsibilities

• Lead and coordinate engineering activities to deliver projects effectively. Apply technical expertise and sound judgement to solve problems, plan tasks, and manage delivery within scope, time, and budget.
• Share expertise and mentor others to build capability across engineering teams.
• Promote cross functional collaboration and ensure compliance with relevant processes and standards.
• Engage with partners and stakeholders to develop joint technical approaches and support business development. Represent the team in external forums and customer meetings.
• Ensure projects/programmes are conducted in a safe manner, highlighting hazards and providing options to reduce risk as low as responsibly practicable.
• Apply consistent governance across technical programmes where involved. Act as a peer or independent reviewer for other projects or programmes of work where suitable.

Essential Experience

• Significant previous experience of leading multidisciplinary project teams.
• Substantial experience of structural design to recognised codes of practice, either Maritime or Civil.
• Experience of Finite Element Analysis of structures and systems.
• Proficient in FEA software (ideally Abaqus).
• Proficient in CAD software.

Essential Qualifications

• BEng / MEng in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent industry experience.
