Opportunity: Principal Highways Engineer
Location: Greater Manchester
Rate: Negotiable and Competitive
Duration: 6 months +
IR35: Inside

We are seeking two Principal Highways Engineers to support with leading and delivering high-quality highways design and construction projects. You will manage complex programmes, oversee budgets, drive project delivery, and lead a team of engineers and technical staff to ensure projects are completed efficiently, safely, and sustainably.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the planning, design, and delivery of highways projects from the detailed design stage.
  • Manage project budgets, resources, and programmes to ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget.
  • Provide technical leadership and expert advice on highway engineering standards, design, and construction techniques.
  • Mentor, develop, and lead a team of engineers and technical staff, fostering a collaborative and high-performing culture.
  • Work closely with internal stakeholders, external consultants, contractors, and statutory bodies to ensure successful project delivery.
  • Drive continuous improvement in project management, design practices, and delivery processes.
  • Ensure compliance with all health, safety, and environmental regulations and policies.
Requirements
  • Incorporated or near Chartered Engineer status is (IEng/CEng) in Civil Engineering or related discipline is desirable.
  • Significant experience leading and delivering highways or infrastructure projects.
  • Proven track record of managing programmes, budgets, and multi disciplinary teams.
  • Strong knowledge of highways design standards, project management methodologies, and construction practices.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Experience working within a local authority or public sector environment.
  • Knowledge of sustainable transport and highway innovation initiatives.
