Principal Bridge Engineer

Overview

We are currently working for a Consultancy in the heart of Leeds who are looking for a Senior / Principal Bridge Engineer. They are organically growing due to a healthy pipeline in projects. They work on both UK and Ireland projects.

Role Overview

As a Chartered Bridge Engineer, you will play a key role in the design and delivery of bridge and multidisciplinary infrastructure projects. Working alongside our established teams across the UK and Ireland, you'll contribute technical expertise and leadership to ensure high-quality outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver design and assessment of new and existing bridge and civil structures, covering a variety of forms, materials, and structural elements.
• Contribute to early project stages including scoping, surveys, inspections, feasibility studies, and scheme design.
• Lead and carry out detailed design, modelling, calculations, and review of technical drawings.
• Prepare and review specifications, contracts, and technical reports.
• Act as signatory for Approval in Principle (AIP) reports, design certificates, and Cat 3 check certificates, and serve as client/design representative on site when required.
• Engage with clients ranging from local authorities to national bodies, consultants, and D&B contractors.
• Support business development by building client relationships, identifying opportunities, and contributing to bids and tenders.
• Manage project finances within agreed budgets and oversee the work of engineers and technicians.
• Proficiency with structural analysis and finite element software.
• In-depth knowledge of DMRB, Eurocodes, and relevant UK bridge/structural standards.
• Experience preparing and checking contract documentation and supporting contract delivery.
• Skilled in managing budgets, tenders, and fee proposals.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with high attention to detail.
• Ability to thrive under pressure, balancing multiple deadlines with flexibility and focus.
• Fluent or highly proficient in spoken and written English.
• Experience in multidisciplinary consultancy or contracting, particularly in highways, geotechnics, rail, or water sectors.

Qualifications

• Chartered Engineer (ICE, IStructE, or equivalent).
• Minimum of 7 years' post-graduate experience in bridge engineering within consultancy, client, or contractor environments.
• Strong technical expertise in bridge design and engineering.
• Proven experience leading and delivering full bridge projects or major project components.
• Track record of client-facing responsibilities and multidisciplinary collaboration.
• Experience in multidisciplinary consultancy or contracting, particularly in highways, geotechnics, rail, or water sectors.
