Job Description

I am currently working with a fantastic Primary school based in the South lakes area. The school are looking to appoint a qualified and experienced teaching assistant to join them in September. The role will be working Monday to Friday in a mixed year 5/6 class. The role is supporting 4 students with full time EHCP plans along with 2 very experienced Support assistants.

Purpose of the Role

To provide dedicated 1:1 support for a named pupil within a mixed Year 5/6 class, enabling them to access the curriculum, develop independence, and achieve their full potential academically, socially, and emotionally.

Key Responsibilities

Pupil Support

  • Work on a 1:1 basis with a specific pupil, supporting learning in line with the class teacher's plans and EHCP (if applicable).
  • Adapt learning activities to meet the pupil's individual needs.
  • Support the pupil in developing independence, confidence, and self-esteem.
  • Assist with emotional regulation and behaviour management in line with school policies.
  • Monitor and record progress, providing feedback to the class teacher and SENDCo.

Classroom Support

  • Support the class teacher in delivering high-quality teaching and learning.
  • Help prepare resources and learning materials tailored to the pupil's needs.
  • Assist in small group work where appropriate.
  • Promote inclusion by supporting the pupil's participation in whole-class activities.

Special Educational Needs (SEN) Support

  • Implement strategies outlined in the pupil's EHCP, IEP, or support plans.
  • Work closely with the SENDCo and external professionals (e.g., speech and language therapists).
  • Support the pupil with additional needs such as:
    • ASD / ADHD
    • SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health)
    • Learning difficulties
  • Use appropriate strategies such as visual supports, sensory breaks, or structured routines.

Behaviour & Safeguarding

  • Promote positive behaviour and follow the school's behaviour policy.
  • Be vigilant in safeguarding and child protection, reporting concerns immediately.
  • Ensure a safe and supportive learning environment at all times.

Communication

  • Liaise regularly with the class teacher, SENDCo, and other staff.
  • Provide feedback on pupil progress and wellbeing.
  • Contribute to review meetings where required.

Person Specification

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Experience working with primary-aged children, ideally in KS2.
  • Understanding of supporting pupils with SEN.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with pupils and staff.
  • Patience, empathy, and a nurturing approach.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team.

Desirable

  • Experience working 1:1 with a child with additional needs.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding procedures.
  • Relevant qualification (e.g., Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant).
  • Experience with behaviour support strategies or interventions.

Working Conditions
