This is an exciting opportunity to work on a project to identify biomarkers and disease mechanisms associated with rare cardiac and metabolic disorders. The applicant will join a British Heart Foundation and BRC at Great Ormond Street Hospital sponsored grant to look at the mechanisms underlying rare cardiac conditions including the arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathies (ACMs). ACMs are a major cause of sudden cardiac death (SCD) affecting 1:2000 individuals worldwide. Yet, risk stratification remains highly challenging, especially in adolescents and young adults, who may not have overt clinical disease. This shortcoming is largely related to ACM being an umbrella term for a broad spectrum of conditions requiring different diagnostic/prognostic frameworks and management approaches. We aim to find new biomarkers, identify disease mechanisms, drug targets and develop new tests for use in the diagnosis, patient stratification and monitoring of trials. The applicant will work in the Translational Mass Spectrometry Group and will be involved in using multiomic techniques to study and understand rare cardiac and metabolic disease. Techniques will include preparing samples and using mass spectrometry for proteomics, metabolomics and lipidomic analyses (Waters UPLC triple quadrupole and QTOF MS instruments).
Further InformationI have a position in my lab for a post doc for 9.5 months in the first instance and with the possibility of an extra 8 months. We would are looking for someone with targeted proteomics experience on triple quadrupoles and with qtof experience to find and develop new tests for rare cardiac and metabolic disorders. I wonder if it is possible to send it to the proteomics group to see if anyone is interested.
