Reporting to the PM Practice Lead, the PM Practice Manager manages the day-to-day delivery and development of GBE-N's Process, Systems and People service. The role translates agreed strategy, standards and priorities into practical processes, systems, tools and capability services that support consistent and effective project delivery across GBE-N.

Working collaboratively across the PMO, delivery teams and corporate functions, the post holder coordinates the implementation, operation and continuous improvement of project management practice. The role manages an integrated service plan, resolves operational issues, monitors adoption and performance, and takes ownership of agreed improvement initiatives, escalating strategic decisions and material risks to the PM Practice Lead.

The remit is intentionally broad while the PM Practice capability develops. As the principal delivery resource supporting the PM Practice Lead, the role must balance hands-on delivery with stakeholder engagement, service management and the establishment of sustainable ways of working that can scale as GBE-N matures.

Accountabilities & Responsibilities:

  • Translate the PM Practice Lead's strategy and priorities into an integrated service plan, roadmap and prioritised improvement backlog for Process, Systems and People.
  • Manage day-to-day PM Practice delivery, coordinating demand, priorities, dependencies, risks, resources and service performance, and escalating matters requiring senior direction.
  • Develop, maintain and continuously improve the Project Management Framework and its supporting processes, standards, templates, guidance, accountabilities and interfaces, ensuring they are controlled, proportionate and practical for users.
  • Coordinate the consultation, approval, publication, implementation and review of PM Practice products, using assurance findings, lessons learned, performance evidence and user feedback to drive improvement.
  • Act as the PM Practice business lead for systems and tools, defining requirements and coordinating priorities, testing, implementation, issue resolution and enhancements with Digital and technical specialists.
  • Develop project management capability through competency frameworks, role profiles, learning pathways, induction, professional development, communities of practice and knowledge sharing.
  • Lead the adoption of common ways of working through engagement, communications, workshops, training, coaching and practical support to programme and project teams.
  • Monitor and report on service performance, adoption, capability risks and improvement outcomes, providing evidence-based recommendations to the PM Practice Lead.
  • Maintain effective relationships and clear service interfaces across delivery teams, Project Controls, Governance and Reporting, assurance, Digital, People, Quality, Commercial and Finance.
  • Support assurance readiness and continuous improvement by coordinating evidence, addressing framework gaps and tracking agreed actions, while maintaining clear separation between framework ownership, first-line delivery and independent assurance.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience required:

  • Relevant practical experience in project, programme or portfolio management practice, PMO, project controls, business improvement or organisational capability within a large or complex environment.
  • Experience of translating strategic direction into practical and sustainable services that bring together processes, systems, tools and people.
  • Good working knowledge of project delivery frameworks, lifecycle models, governance and proportionate controls, with experience of developing or improving standards, processes, templates and guidance.
  • Understanding of how project management practice connects with project controls, risk, change, assurance, business cases, benefits, commercial, finance, digital, quality and organisational capability.
  • Experience of defining business requirements and coordinating improvements for project management systems, data workflows, tools or automation with Digital, technical teams or suppliers.
  • Experience of supporting professional and workforce capability through competency frameworks, role design, learning, onboarding, communities of practice or workforce planning.
  • Planning, analytical and service-management skills, with the ability to manage competing demands, dependencies, risks and improvement activity with limited supervision.
  • Proven stakeholder-management and communication skills, with the ability to influence across organisational boundaries, facilitate discussions and provide constructive, evidence-based challenge.
  • Sound judgement and systems thinking, with the ability to develop practical, proportionate solutions while understanding their wider organisational impact.
  • Experience of supporting sustainable change, adoption and continuous improvement across multiple teams.
  • A clear understanding of the respective roles of framework ownership, first-line delivery, management oversight and independent assurance.

Qualifications

  • A relevant degree, professional qualification or equivalent experience gained through work, vocational learning or another route.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development. APM, PMI or equivalent membership, or progress towards a relevant qualification, would be welcomed but is not essential.
