Job Description

Working under the directionof the lead nurse and as part of the practice multidisciplinary team, the postholder will be responsible for performing venepuncture, as requested by theclinical team, to the entitled patient population.

Main duties of the job

In addition, thePhlebotomist will be expected to support the nursing team on an as requiredbasis.East Croydon Medical Centre mustensure that the post holder has access to appropriate clinical supervision andan appropriate named individual in the organisation to provide general adviceand support on a day-to-day basis.

Job responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities:

The following are the core responsibilities of the Phlebotomist. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:

  • Obtaining patient consent for the collection of a blood sample.
  • Performing venepuncture in accordance with practice protocols.
  • Maintaining accurate patient records on the clinical IT system.
  • The correct labelling, packaging, and storing of samples.
  • Effective use of the specimen log, resolving any discrepancies.
  • Ensuring samples are sent to the laboratory in a timely manner.
  • Maintaining an effective liaison with the NHS Trust laboratory staff.
  • Working collaboratively with the nursing team, seeking guidance when necessary for patient related matters.

In addition to the primary responsibilities, the Phlebotomist may be requested to:

  • Participate in practice audit as directed by the audit lead.
  • Participate in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care.
  • Support and participate in shared learning within the practice.
  • Complete opening and closing procedures in accordance with the duty rota.

Person Specification Experience
  • Understanding of infection control and health & safety protocols.
  • Experience of working with the general public
  • Experience of working in a healthcare setting
  • Experience of working in a primary care environment
  • Venepuncture
  • Ability to record accurate clinical notes
Qualifications
  • Certified training in Phlebotomy
  • Good standard of general education
Skills
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral)
  • Attention to detail and the ability to follow protocols.
  • Effective time management (planning and organising)
  • Ability to follow clinical policy and procedure
Other requirements
  • Occupational Health clearance
  • Flexibility to work outside of core office hours
