PhD Studentship in Neurodegeneration After Traumatic Brain Injury

The University of Exeter is offering a fully funded PhD studentship focused on developing blood-based tests for the early detection of neurodegeneration following traumatic brain injury (TBI). The studentship is part of the GW4 BioMed3 Doctoral Landscape Programme, which is offering up to 18 MRC-funded PhD studentships across a range of biomedical disciplines. The programme offers opportunities across biomedical research disciplines and brings together researchers across the GW4 partnership.

Research Project

The project will investigate the development of blood tests for the early detection of neurodegeneration following traumatic brain injury.

Traumatic brain injury can have consequences that extend well beyond the initial injury, with some individuals developing longer-term neurological changes. The project aims to investigate blood-based approaches that could help identify early signs of neurodegeneration.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct research focused on the early detection of neurodegeneration following traumatic brain injury (TBI).
• Contribute to the development and evaluation of blood-based tests and biomarkers for neurodegenerative changes.
• Design and carry out research activities related to the PhD project.
• Analyse and interpret research findings and contribute to scientific conclusions.
• Participate in research training and professional development through the GW4 BioMed3 programme.
• Work collaboratively within the wider GW4 research environment.
• Contribute to research outputs, presentations and scientific communication.
• Engage with patient and public involvement (PPI) activities where relevant to the research programm

Qualifications & Skills Required

• A relevant undergraduate or postgraduate degree in a biomedical or related scientific discipline.
• Academic background relevant to neuroscience, biomedical sciences, molecular biology, biochemistry, medicine or related fields would be advantageous.
• Applicants must meet the eligibility requirements of the GW4 BioMed3 Doctoral Landscape Programme.
• Strong interest in biomedical and translational research.
• Ability to understand and critically evaluate scientific literature.
• Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
