Pharmacy Assistant

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Pharmacy Assistant to join our team. The post will be based in our Pharmacy Department at Bassetlaw Hospital which is fully automated. Pharmacy experience is desirable but not essential, as full training will be given. The successful candidate must undertake a Level 2 qualification in Pharmacy Services.

Candidates are required to have GCSE qualifications in Science, English language and Maths at Grade C or above. Certificates must be provided at interview. Candidates with a Level 2 qualification or equivalent are also eligible. Candidates with non UK equivalent qualifications must possess a Statement of Comparability, also to be provided at interview. Candidates must also have good numeric, literacy and keyboard skills. The post involves manual handling and use of a pallet truck, so candidates will need to be physically fit.

Hours: 9am to 5:30pm, Monday to Friday, with weekend and bank holiday rota participation required.

Main duties of the job
  • Dispensing and issuing medicines for inpatients, outpatients and discharges using the robotic dispensing machine
  • Aseptic preparation of medicines, including TPN for adults and neonates
  • Supply of stock medicines to the wards and departments at Bassetlaw Hospital and Retford Hospital
  • Topping up of stock medicines at ward/department level
  • Releasing orders from the automated pharmacy robot and assisting in loading of the robot
  • Cover for storekeeping duties including receiving goods from wholesalers and suppliers, performing checks and entering them onto the pharmacy computer system
  • Stock taking of medicines
  • Over labeling of medicines
  • Undertaking routine environmental monitoring
  • Participating in weekend and bank holiday rotas
  • Cover at DRI Pharmacy as necessary
Qualifications & Training
  • 3 GCSEs including science, English language and maths at grade C or above; or equivalent qualification/relevant experience
  • BTEC Level 2 Pharmaceutical Science and/or NVQ Level 2 Pharmacy Service Skills; or equivalent qualification
  • 5 GCSEs with 2 science GCSE at grade C or above; or equivalent qualification
  • EDCL
Knowledge & Experience
  • Demonstrable ability to study to NVQ2 level
  • Hospital or community pharmacy experience
Personal Attributes & Skills
  • Ability to undertake manipulation of syringes and devices for aseptic dispensing
  • Methodical, accurate and quick working under pressure
  • Possess tact and diplomacy where appropriate
  • Effective communication with patients, staff and colleagues
  • Ability to manage own time
  • Desire to work for the NHS
