PET Radiographer/ Imaging Technologist (maternity cover)

We are looking for an enthusiastic PETRadiographer/ Imaging Technologist to join our PET Imaging Centre and GuysCancer Centre for a 12 month contract (maternity leave cover).

Main duties of the job

The purpose of the role is to be a member of amulti-disciplinary team in providing an efficient, effective and timely PET-CTimaging service to the patients, clinicians and researchers using the Centre,and to contribute to the development of the service, participating in allaspects of clinical and research scanning procedures. You will provide a high levelof clinical care to all patients and research subjects, working within allrelevant regulatory and clinical governance guidelines as required by KCL andGuys & St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust at both sites.

The successful post holder will demonstrate a soundawareness of good patient care and confidentiality. Excellent Imaging skills inclinical and/or research fields are essential and should be paired with up todate knowledge of imaging techniques, and knowledge of the principles of PETscanning and the relationship of PET to other imaging modalities. Previous postgrad experience is desirable, but not essential and post holders must havehands on experience in Nuclear Medicine, CT or MRI.

The post holder must have a BSc / Diploma in Radiography OR an equivalent recognisedNuclear Medicine Qualification.The successful candidate will be able to work well in a team, calmly underpressure, be empathetic and able to use their own initiative to problem solve. Therole will work across both sites as needed to train staff and visitors as wellas to provide cover.

About us

The PET Centre is part of Guys & St ThomasNHS Foundation Trust and Kings College London within the School of BiomedicalEngineering & Imaging Sciences. As such, we run an extensive clinical PETservice, including a wide range of specialist indications, and an extensiveclinical research programme. Facilities include a cyclotron, radiochemistrylabs and a new scanning facilities with 3 PET-CT scanners and a PET-MR.

Job responsibilities

Clinical:

  • Toperform excellent quality imaging studies in accordance with departmentalprotocols in an efficient, safe and timely manner
  • Towork as a member of a professional team, liaising closely with andsupporting colleagues in the delivery of a high quality scanning service
  • Toprovide a high level of patient care before, during and after imagingprocedures
  • Tobe responsible for handling radioactive tracers in accordance with the localrules.
  • Afterinitial training, to be able to establish venous access and be responsiblefor drawing, measuring and injecting radiotracers into patients under theguidance of the ARSAC license holder
  • Toact as an operator under the IRMER regulations
  • Toensure that relevant documentation e.g. referral forms, ARSAC, studyconsents are completed correctly prior to administering radioactivity
  • Tointerview each patient and accurately record all relevant information on thescanning data sheet
  • Toprovide a detailed explanation of the scanning procedure to each patient andtheir carers prior to commencing the procedure
  • Tobe prepared to answer queries relating to the procedure or the patientscondition, requesting additional help from senior or clinical colleagues asappropriate
  • Tobe sensitive and supportive of each patients needs whilst ensuring thatoptimum quality scanning is achieved

Operational

  • Performroutine radioactive contamination monitoring as per the departmental localrules
  • Toutilize all departmental equipment safely and effectively
  • Toperform routine quality control checks on all relevant equipment
  • Reportany problems, malfunctions or failures of equipment to the Super Intendent Radiographerand/or his or her deputy, labeling and removing from circulation any unsafeequipment
  • Toutilise the imaging networks for both KCL & Guy's & St Thomas'Hospitals in accordance with departmental protocols
  • Toliaise closely with the administrative staff to ensure efficient and timelypatient throughput is achieved
  • Toassist the Super Intendent Radiographer and/or his or her deputy inorganising the workload in line with clinical priorities
  • Toparticipate in staff meetings as required
  • Toparticipate in a flexible rota providing cover between 7:30am and 7pmdepending on workload requirement

Person Specification Qualifications
  • BSc / Diploma in Radiography or recognised Nuclear Medicine qualification
  • Registration with IPEM or HCPC
Knowledge and skills
  • Up to date knowledge of imaging techniques including knowledge of the principles of PET scanning and the relationship of PET to other imaging modalities and
  • An understanding of cross-sectional anatomy
  • Excellent computing skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and able to work well with a variety of people and in a team
Experience
  • Excellent imaging and patient care skills
  • Hands on experience in Nuclear Medicine or PET-CT
  • Experience in following protocols and complying with local rules
  • Handling of unsealed radiation sources
  • Handling of blood products
