Payroll Consultant/Manager - INSIDE IR35

2 WEEK PROJECT WORK CONTRACT

Our client, a consulting company, are recruiting for a Payroll Manager to join the team on a contract basis for 2 weeks.

Job Purpose

An experienced payroll professional to lead a comprehensive audit of our pensionable pay processes. This role involves reviewing current payroll practices, identifying any discrepancies or risks in pensionable pay calculations, ensuring compliance with regulatory and scheme requirements, and making recommendations for process improvements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct a detailed audit of pensionable pay processes across all employee categories.
  • Review payroll records and processes to ensure correct pensionable earnings are being reported and contributions are accurately calculated.
  • Identify inconsistencies, gaps, or non-compliance in line with pension scheme rules.
  • Assess the treatment of allowances, bonuses, overtime, and other pay elements in relation to pensionable pay.
  • Collaborate with payroll, HR, and pensions teams to understand current practices and historical context.
  • Develop and deliver a clear, evidence based audit report with findings, risk assessment, and actionable recommendations.
  • Support the organisation in implementing changes to ensure future compliance and best practice.
  • Advise on policy updates or controls required to strengthen accuracy and transparency in pensionable pay processes.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Proven experience in payroll operations, preferably in a public sector or large scale environment.
  • Strong understanding of pensionable pay rules within occupational pension schemes.
  • Knowledge of HMRC payroll regulations, pension contributions, and statutory requirements.
  • Experience conducting audits, investigations, or internal reviews.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Competent with payroll systems and Excel/data analysis tools.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience working with external auditors or regulatory bodies.
  • Knowledge of pensions administration systems or payroll software SAP
  • Qualification in payroll (eg CIPP) or internal auditing (eg IIA).
