Paralegal - Prison Team

Location: Manchester Department: Casualty / Prison & Custodial Litigation Team

Team Overview

The Secure Estate team primarily serves private prison and custodial organisations, helping them manage legal, regulatory, and reputational issues arising from deaths in custody, judicial review/prisoner claims, human rights challenges, and other litigation related to prison operations.

Role Overview

As a Paralegal within the Secure Estate Team, you will support partners, legal directors, senior associates, and associates in the management of cases involving HMPrison & Probation Service and other custodial bodies. This position offers exposure to complex and sensitive matters and a platform for career development.

Responsibilities
  • Assist with the management of prison related litigation matters.
  • Review and analyse legal documents, medical records and evidence.
  • Draft correspondence, court documents and witness statements.
  • Prepare instructions to counsel and experts.
  • Conduct legal research and prepare case summaries.
  • Liaise with clients, witnesses, experts and other stakeholders.
  • Manage court deadlines and maintain accurate case records.
  • Support the team with disclosure exercises and document review projects.
  • Assist with trial preparation and hearing bundles.
Qualifications
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and analytical abilities.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritise effectively.
  • Proactive and collaborative approach to work.
  • Confidence in building relationships with colleagues and clients.
  • Strong IT skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook, and the ability to quickly learn and use case management and document management systems.
