Job Description
Paediatric Emergency Department Assistant

Responsibilities
  • Work as a Paediatric Emergency Department Assistant within a high pressured, fast moving environment.
  • Prioritise and deliver care to patients.
  • Demonstrate high standards of care and set examples of best practice within the delivery of patient care in the Emergency Department.
  • Ensure patients' safety, privacy and dignity is maintained at all times.
  • Assist in age related play and distraction therapy.
  • Support the registered nurses of the Emergency Department.
  • Undertake duties determined by the Department Managers and Matron including working within the main department during times of surge.
  • Comply with all relevant policies and procedures to maintain the safety of patients within the Emergency Department.
  • Ensure patient safety, comfort and welfare and provide support to relatives and advocates as required.
Person Specification Qualifications
  • NVQ Level 2 in Health & Social Care
Experience
  • Experience as a Health Care Assistant in a permanent post.
  • Experience of working as part of a team.
  • Experience of organising and prioritising own workload.
  • Experience of NHS computer systems.
  • Experience in the Emergency Department.
Skills & Attributes
  • Basic IT skills to document on the electronic patient record.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Ability to recognise when support is required.
  • Ability to make shared clinical and professional decisions taking into consideration Trust/Departmental Policies/Procedures.
  • Flexible.
  • Good organisational skills.
  • Knowledge and practical experience of manual handling.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, in a variety of settings with patients of varying levels of understanding and refer questions to others where appropriate.
  • Able to deal with sensitive issues with tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to develop effective interpersonal relationships with colleagues in the health care setting.
  • Willingness to use equipment; full training provided.
  • Observation training.
  • ECG training.
  • Venepuncture training.
  • Understanding of professional conduct and confidentiality.
  • Able to perform a wide range of duties.
  • Cannulation training.
