The University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay are inviting applications for a full time or part time Speciality doctor in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery to work alongside our team. The Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Unit at the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust offers a wide range of experience in OMFS, including dentoalveolar surgery, oral medicine, orthognathic surgery, trauma surgery and the management of non-melanotic skin cancer.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will join the OMFS team which consists of 4 consultants (OMFS and Oral Surgery), 1 Specialist in Oral Surgery, 3 Specialty Doctors, 1 Specialty Trainee in Oral Surgery, 2 Dental core trainees. The department works alongside our Orthodontic and Restorative Dentistry services to provide high quality care for the patients of Morecambe Bay.

The post holder will undertake a number of clinical sessions per week dependent upon experience and service needs, divided between new referral clinics, follow-up clinics, treatment under local anaesthetics, intravenous sedation and general anaesthetic as either inpatient or day case under the supervision of the consultants.

The post is full time and supports a 1:5 non-resident evening and weekend 1st on call rota with support from a consultant/Associate specialist 2nd tier.

The post will be based at Royal Lancaster Infirmary but involve travel to different hospital sites to work.

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services. WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with non-life threatening conditions.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery, with additional local outreach services and diagnostics across Morecambe Bay.

Person specification Qualifications
  • Full Registration with the General Dental Council / General Medical Council
  • FDS, MFDS, MJDF or equivalent
  • Completion of maxillofacial trauma plating course
  • Completion of SAAD course or equivalent
Experience
  • Minimum 2 years previous experience of work in oral and maxillofacial surgery
  • Ability to operate and work independently whilst being aware of own limitations and know when to consult senior colleagues
  • Experience in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery or Oral Surgery
