Ocean Import Coordinator

Manchester Full Time Permanent

We are seeking an experienced Ocean Import Coordinator to join a busy and growing operations team. This role is primarily focused on managing inbound sea freight shipments and would suit someone with a strong background in ocean imports, customs processes, and customer service within freight forwarding. Export and cross-trade activity may arise occasionally, but imports will be the main focus of the position.

The Role

You will be responsible for overseeing ocean import shipments from receipt of pre-alert through to customs clearance and final delivery, ensuring cargo moves efficiently, compliantly, and in line with customer requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage FCL and LCL import shipments from origin through to final destination
  • Process pre-alerts and monitor shipment progress from overseas partners
  • Liaise with shipping lines, hauliers, warehouses, customers, and international agents
  • Coordinate customs clearance activities and ensure all documentation is accurate and complete
  • Arrange cargo release, transport, and final delivery requirements
  • Keep customers informed with proactive shipment updates and issue resolution
  • Maintain accurate operational records, job costing, and invoicing
  • Support account growth through excellent customer service and relationship management
  • Assist with additional freight movements and operational projects as required
  • Ensure compliance with internal procedures and industry regulations

About You

The successful candidate will have:

  • Previous experience handling ocean freight imports within a freight forwarding environment
  • Strong understanding of import documentation and customs procedures
  • Experience working with shipping lines, carriers, and overseas agents
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise multiple shipments
  • High attention to detail and a proactive approach to problem solving
  • Good commercial awareness and understanding of operational costs
  • Competent IT skills, including freight forwarding and Microsoft Office systems

Desirable

  • Experience of customs entries and import compliance
  • CargoWise experience
  • Industry qualifications within freight forwarding or logistics
  • Knowledge of both import and export operations
