Job Description

The Band 6 Nurse Team Leader plays a key role in deliveringsafe, effective, and compassionate care on our 27 bedded Care of the Elderly ward. You will provide visible clinical leadership, coordinating the daily running ofthe ward and ensuring high standards of practice for older adults with complexmedical needs. As shift leader, you will manage staffing, allocate workload,support patient flow, and maintain clear communication with themultidisciplinary team.

You will use advanced assessment and decision makingskills to plan and evaluate care for patients with frailty, dementia, longtermconditions, and acute illness. Recognising deterioration, escalating concerns,and supporting safe discharge planning are essential parts of the role. Youwill act as a mentor and role model, supervising junior staff, supportinglearning, and contributing to appraisals and competency development.

Quality, safety, and governance are central to thisposition. You will help monitor standards, participate in audits, supportincident review, and ensure compliance with infection prevention, safeguarding,medication safety, and documentation requirements. You will contribute toservice improvement and promote a positive, supportive team culture.

Above all, you will champion dignity, respect, and person centredcare, ensuring older adults and their families receive an excellent experiencethroughout their stay.

Main duties of the job

To be responsible for a large team of staff, including StaffNurses, Nursing Associates, Health Care Support Workers, Student Nurses,apprentices and volunteers. To work closely with all members of the multiprofessional team to ensure that patients receive seamless care within theTrust and community. To provide specialist advice to support assessment,planning and implementation of care and where appropriate carry out specialistnursing procedures. To contribute to specialist education and trainingprogrammes for other staff and learners. To actively assist the Ward Manager,deputising in their absence, in maintaining a safe environment, whilstutilising the staff base to maximum efficiency.

Person Specification Knowledge
  • Commitment to continuous personal development for revalidation NMC

Experience
  • Specialist/Management training /experience
  • Experience in Acute Medicine
  • Experience of working at band 6 in an Acute setting and be able to demonstrate effective leadership skills
  • Recruitment and selection experience
  • Presenting complex information to large groups
Qualifications
  • Current level one NMC registration
  • Relevant learning beyond registration
  • Teaching/Mentorship Qualification
