Network Engineer
Posted 3 hours 41 minutes ago by National Physical Laboratory
Our world-leading Time & Frequency department is seeking a Network Engineer with hands-on network design, implementation, and operational experience.
You will join our team at an exciting time - we maintain the UK's National Time Scale, UTC (NPL), and are developing a new resilient Time Scale facility to underpin our Critical National Infrastructure. This initiative addresses risks associated with dependency on global navigation satellite systems like GPS, which are vulnerable to natural and intentional interference.
You will enjoy collaborating with prominent Scientists, Engineers, and Cyber Security Specialists to design and implement network infrastructure that meets time, quality, and cost objectives.
Key responsibilities:
- Design and Architecture: Contribute to creating comprehensive network designs supporting scientific and engineering needs, ensuring robustness, scalability, and security.
- Build and Specification: Assist in specifying, selecting, and procuring networking equipment compatible with existing and future components.
- Configuration and Implementation: Configure and deploy network solutions, including routers, switches, firewalls, and other devices tailored to project requirements.
- Testing: Conduct integration tests, document and analyze results to identify improvements.
- Troubleshooting and Support: Help troubleshoot complex network issues to ensure minimal downtime and optimal performance.
Essential qualifications and experience:
- Relevant academic/professional qualifications or equivalent hands-on experience
- Design, commissioning, and support of enterprise-grade network solutions (WAN, LAN, Data Centre)
- Experience with network security solutions and deployment
- Experience with network monitoring tools
Highly desirable:
- Current 'Professional' vendor certifications in Routing, Switching, Security, or Service Provider roles
We welcome applicants from all backgrounds. Due to the nature of our work, nationality, residency, and security clearance requirements are specific. To work at NPL, BPSS clearance is required. For this role, SC clearance with no restrictions, or the ability to obtain it, is necessary.
Note: Applications are reviewed continuously, and the closing date may be advanced. We encourage early applications.
