Job Description

For every ambition, every action, every change. If you are ready to step into a role where your decisions shape real lives and communities, this is where your journey begins.

Our two-year programme

Designed to develop diverse graduates from any degree background, our programme aims to build trust, reduce crime, and transform communities as neighbourhood police officers.

The role of a neighbourhood police officer

On our National Graduate Programme, you'll specialise in neighbourhood policing, working proactively to create safer communities and address long-term issues to improve residents' quality of life.

You'll be part of a neighbourhood policing team, embedded within a community for two years, focusing on identifying threats, harm, risks, and tackling local issues and complex challenges.

Being a police officer is demanding but rewarding. You'll have the opportunity to make a significant difference and be supported by a broad network throughout your journey.

This programme offers the chance to develop skills for future leadership in society and policing.

Your salary starts from day one at the training academy. During the programme, you will have full ownership of your work to bring about positive change, with the satisfaction of seeing your impact on individuals' lives.

Training and development

Our award-winning training provides a foundation for a successful career in policing. During the 7 to 13-week residential training academy, you'll work with a Performance and Development Coach to support your transition into a new career. You may also apply for external secondments or internal attachments in your second year.

Upon successful completion, you will be a fully warranted neighbourhood police officer with a permanent role and will join our Police Now alumni network. Many graduates progress to promotions or explore other policing areas such as Counter Terrorism, VAWG, Firearms, or Investigations.

Rewards and benefits

Your salary begins on day one at the training academy, starting at £29,907, increasing annually up to £48,231 within seven years. On promotion to sergeant, the salary starts at £51,408.

Additional benefits
  • Leave: 22 days per year, increasing to 30, plus public holidays and other leave types.
  • Work-life balance: Varied shift patterns offer flexibility, with several days off in a row, aiding work-life balance once adapted.
  • Pension: Enrolment in the Police Pension Scheme 2015, offering a secure retirement package.
  • Additional perks: Discounts, subsidies, and access to leisure and sporting activities through partner organisations.
