Job Description

Middlesbrough Borough Council is seeking a Mental Health & Behaviour Change Practitioner to join the substance use service based at The Live Well Centre. This is an unqualified social care role delivering structured, evidence-based psychological interventions - including CBT-informed work, motivational interviewing, DBT-skills and psychoeducation - to service users experiencing low-level emotional and psychological barriers to change. You will assess and formulate low-intensity mental health needs, plan brief interventions, and elevate more complex or higher-risk cases appropriately. The role includes mentoring and providing reflective practice oversight for two trainee practitioners, contributing to the Behaviour Change Toolkit, and supporting applied research linked to the national 10-year drug strategy and academic partners. You will engage in monthly clinical supervision, quality assurance activities, and collaborate with caseworkers and wider partners to deliver integrated, person-centred care. Accurate case note and outcome recording is required throughout. This is a temporary post running from September 2026 to July 2027, paying £22.12 per hour. If you have experience in substance use, mental health or behaviour change work and enjoy mentoring others, we would love to hear from you.

What's on offer:
  • Excellent, competitive pay rates - paid weekly
  • Supportive management team with approachable, experienced leaders
  • A desirable location with great transport links
  • A stable, well-resourced, and encouraging working environment
